O/T Lathe chucks

Hi folks,

We are needing to purchase a new chuck for our CNC lathe, a mori seiki. Can anybody recommend a brand of chuck that is good quality and a reasonable price? Our tool purchasing person is looking at kitigawa chucks and would like to know if they would be a good choice.

Thanks in advance,

Smit

We have several Kitagawas that run well for us.

We also have a 13" Powerhold high-speed chuck that has been very reliable for many years.

Both our Kitagawas and our Powerhold are the serrated jaw type and are limited in their setup repeatability because of this [all of this type of chuck have that issue]

We have an SMW Autoblock 10" chuck with their quick-change jaw system which is quite nice and very reliable. The BIG downside to this chuck is the cost of the jaw blanks (around $400 a set). We typically offset this by boring both sides of the jaws [as they are reversible] which gives us two sets of jaws for every one set of blanks. This chuck is very easy to change over and the jaws repeat very well after change, but the chuck and jaws are more expensive because of this feature [of course].

The chuck for you depends on what you need; if you are realistic about what you want the chuck to do, it is much easier to make the right selection
