Peel Mill Help

I'm trying to use a peel mill type toolpath to rough out a closed slot.

Picture a U

1.25" wide.. the legs are 1" long and the end is a full radius..

the open end is the edge of the stock

I want to use a 1/2" tool and its kicking my butt.

I can chain the 2 straight lines and it works great.. but doesn't rough the closed radius.

I can fake it by putting another full radius on it and using high speed area mill

but that cuts a ton of air.

Is there an efficient way to do this??

Yes

I drew 2 rectangles then trimmed the open end of the slot out of one rectangle.

The tool's first pass went all the way down the C/L of the slot , then stepped out to rough the slot

You've got the slot closed and its doing what I want.

I'll give that a try..

Thanks

Try using the square as profile 1 and use the entire horse shoe shape as profile two. That will give you what you want. Green as profile and blue as other.

I usually cheat and just close the end of the slot and use the same geometry twice for the two profiles but I dont know if that is a good standard practice to use.. :D

Weird..

I got it working the way I want it.. and the geometry is basically the same as what failed earlier this afternoon.

I'd tried a jillion things with the toolpath, changing from blend to peel to core to area etc etc.

I'll bet that if I'd just deleted it and rechained with a fresh toolpath, it would have worked correctly.
