Open Pockets...

Hello All...

 

I'm trying to mill out some jaws for our chich vises and want to mill from the outside in. The only tool path that I can create in "MC" plunges and doesn't complete the cut. The mills we have are not able to plunge. How can I force the cut to start outside and work to the inside ??? I'm using the "open pocket" type and have the box for "use open pocket cutting method" checked.

 

 

Any ideas ???

You use the "Overlap Percantage" to control how far out the toolpath goes from the boundary.

You may also want to extend the lines off the jaw for some added room

If you don't like the open method, use the normal pocketing style with a "starting point" outside the boundry so that you will not plunge on your jaws.

Jim & Chris... that works, but it takes you way off the edge of the jaw. And I tried extending my lines, but nothing changed.

 

Trevor... I will give that a try.

There is a bug in V9.1 Open Pocket that rears it's head in certain circumstances that will leave stock in the center. Is this what you are seeing?

Already reported and logged.

Here's what I do with non-center cutting tools.

-Use regular pocket method. Create a point where you'd like the tool to plunge. Select that point first, then the rest of the geometry of your pocket. If using depth cuts, uncheck keep tool down..

 

-Another option is to use entry/ramp and helix the tool directly into the material.

Use open pocket , but turn off the switch

for open pocket method. Set your angle where

you want to start. Should be good to go.

I like using CMR's method with open pocket and it works good. just create a point where you want the cutter to start then chain it.
