small holes

Hopefully someone can help.We are drilling small holes with a 1.5mm end mill held in a collet.Having trouble holding size.We just had a guy in the shop telling us a hydraulic chuck would be better(wont deflect).I have never used one and was wondering if anyone has an opinion on them before we spend the money or is it just the end mill itself(sowa 3 flute)We are drilling 1/8 thick 6061 aluminium

Drilling with the end mill is most likely the problem. Can you use a 1/32 and interpolate?

we are trying to keep time down by just drilling straight through there are about 200 holes

Is there a reason you are not using a carbide circuit board drill? Have had grate luck hold size with them.

not sure what those are but will look into it Hole location and size very important will the drill wander if it is not center drilled

carbide circuit board drill are extremely accurate, for size and location without a spotdrill.

Follow this carbide circuit board drill for that size and depth you can go fast and be right on size.

The real question is how do they make those circuit board drills so cheap?

Good question.but they are great drills for small and short distance drilling.

or, try a 3fl super-twister. at 10k you can drill at 100 ipm and the holes will come out right on size and location

130 degree split point (self centering) drill - OSG GDS type HSS coated ones will hold <4tenths on dia.

A hydraulic chuck will be better for run-out (as in will run more accurate) but your problem is probably the tool deflecting/bending as it is so small and plunging.

End mill would be last choice, the center is loading up and pushing the thing all over, the holes will not be predictable or on size.

The circuit board drill is the best option here. They are cheap and deadly accurate, even without a centerdrill or spotdrill.

just got in for my shift this morning Thanks for the input guys sounds like circuit board drills are worth looking at.I guess we were going about it wrong.
