GeForce Graphics GTX970 - anyone using?

We have a PC in the shop where the graphics card is dying (its a GeForce GTX480).

Oil mist etc impregnation so I just bought some 'dirtbags' to wrap it in - we'll see how it goes.

Anyway, I can swap it out with a GeForce GTX680 which is running well in another PC.

But if I have to buy a new card, I'm wondering about a GTX970.

Is anyone using one with mastercam and if so, all okay?

...and no, I won't get a quadro. Never had one and never needed one :harhar:

Hey Newbeee

if you get one of those cards since it has the Nvidia chipset  it should not be a problem, but you can always or at least here you can try it and if it does not work with your system you may be able to take it back and get something else that does work. But do ask about return issues up front since some places do not take anything back if its electronic.  Just ask them up front before you buy .

Then

return with your feedback since i could use a new card with some HP but do not have 5k to blow.

Should work really good, I am using the GTX960 (one step down) with no issues so far. I agree about the Quadro, verify runs like crap with the quadro.

I don't see why you say verify runs like crap with a quadro. I have two, a K3000m and a K5200 and neither one has an issue in verify. The K5200 runs considerably faster and can rotate large models smoothly where the K3000 does get choppy some times.

As for the GTX970, I say go for it. Any higher end Nvidia card will be great with Mastercam. I believe the 970 uses the same chip set as the Quadro K6000 just without all the professional features like ECC.

Hey Awbade could you put a shopping list together on your hardware selection  and maybe the specs and $$$  i am looking at building something this year and am actively following many sources for feedback on how all the different builds are working out . I as i am sure others will be interested in how it works out for you. is this a budget build or what   give a range if you could .

thanks

Not really a budget build, I'm building a rig to do some nice 60+ Frames per second gaming on newer games.

I can lay it out pretty easy. Just realized looking at my parts list it's a 970STRIX not a 980.

Mainly gaming, however I will have VPN Access to my MasterCAM NetHasp, so I will probably do a little bit of after-hours programming on any projects I'm behind on. Might install a few other program demos etc to learn some stuff.

I'm pretty confident It'll be able to handle CAD/CAM work pretty well.

When you get it going the proof will be in the simulator/simulation and modeling of assembly's and how it handles the model. Plus the crunch time for code but the i7 should chew that up pretty good.  Keep us posted  there are some big models on this site or the ftp site you may get to mess with that way you will know what it can handle.

TIA

I'll post some pictures of the build etc, probably in Off-Topic haha.

It'll be fun playing around with a much stronger computer than I'm used to.

I chose the 970 over getting a K4200 so I could get a better CPU on a new build.  Mastercam and Verify runs fine with it and when I'm Verifying CPUID HWMonitor shows the CPU loaded and the GPU hardly running.  It may be the GTX drivers but I'm seeing Verify is more CPU than GPU.

Run it on your laptop  to see if verify loads the gpu

I just downloaded HWMonitor and will stick it on the machines at work. I'm getting the graphics card and will report back.

I took a part that has about 1800" feed length and ran Verify (FF to end) on both machines with HWMonitor running

Laptop 3000M - Time-4:20, CPU-78%, GPU-3%

Homebuilt 970 - Time-2:31, CPU-58%, GPU-4%

Rotating part after machined is when I see loading of the GPU.

3000M-99%

970-68%

Running Verify in play mode uses more GPU time.

3000M-10% average with 24% max

970 - 20% average with 40% max

I'm going to assume that the info from the 5930K CPU is offloaded faster to the 970 and that's why you see the higher percentages.

Awbade, you built almost same box I just did for my younger one about two weekends ago.

CPU 4970K

MB Gigabite Z97

Corsair H100I cpu cooler

Corsair 2x8 2400 ram

Corsair CX750 watt

Intel 530 series 240 gig SSD

Seagate 2 tb Drive

Cooler Master Elite gamming Case
GXT970 GPU

He plays allot of games and also does Blendor and inventor on it . this seems to be a screamer.
We are going to add more ram and try over clocking it.

Yeah it is a screamer. Perfect 7.9 on all Windows Experience index, no benchmark tests yet as I'm waiting on my new CPU Cooler, (Corsair H80 internal watercooled)

Once I get that I'll overclock and run. amazing for gaming, I'm absolutely loving it.

  • 4 months later...

Bit of feedback for everyone/anyone using this card.

I had an issue with the verify crashing (X9) - classic backplot and everything was good and stable, but verify kept randomly crashing.

In x5, old verify was okay - this is only a 9 issue with new verify (which I like and is better imo so good work CNC

I had a similar issue with an older 580 card running (I think) x5, which was fixed by going into the NVDIA control panel and going to 3D settings, and adjust image settings with preview, and change from default of Let the 3D application decide, to Use my preference emphasising Quality.

This seems to have fixed my 9 issue as well.
