large hole

Hello master machinists,

 

can anyone tell me what is the best way to cut large hole? is there a tool out there that allow me to cut large hole for manual milling?

I have seen shops cut it close then use a fly cutter to bring it to size.

 

I have also seen them use a manua rotary table, set the tool down in the material and crank the rotary around.

I can not give a solution without the details we asked U for .

Anyway U can look at this

It is not cheap solution ,but nice to have if U do such kind of work a lot

thank you for replying my message.

 

i have a turn pro. i need to cut hole in 2.5 to 3" dia and .25 -.5 deep.

i only need to do it for a few jobs and the tolerance is not critical.

 

rotary table is a good ideas. is there an adjustable boring tool or some other adjustable tool that can cut like flycutter?

If you are looking for a boring head they cost quite a bit. You might be suprised at how close you can set a fly cutter. This would probably be your cheepest method. If it is a thru hole and the tolerance is not critical you might think about using a hole saw.

It sounds like a slam dunk for a spade drill.

They come in sizes from 3/4" to 4 1/2" off the shelf.

If tolerances really don't matter, I'd use a Milwaukee Hole Hawg...basically just a carbide tipped annular hole saw. Available in 1/16" increments. Cut like a mo-fo in just about any material, but you do have to buy their arbor. Best place to find them is your local welding shop or Milwaukee tool dealer.

If the material is not too thick then

use a Tree pan type cutter. this will save alot of time for large hole sizes becouse the center material is cored out.
