Milling out a Helicoil?

Yes, Helicoil, not Keen-Sert 

 

My coil went to low out of spec and I mangled it with one of those cone shaped extractor tools.  It's a 1/4 - 20.  Now if I mill it out to the tap hole of Ø.266, maybe it will break apart or I can pick it out.  I calculated the remains to be .014 thick per side.  This seems still rather thick to use a dental pick on.  Suggestions?  These are tanged, not tangless.

 

 

EDIT:  I mangled it because we don't have the right size extraction tool.

Im guessing this is a blind hole. could you make a carbide extraction tool from apiece of carbide? Eiher that or use a left handed drill, it should bit on the first coil and spin out.

Typically, if you can pick out the first thread, you can grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers and just pull it out

Yes - as JP says.

Get a scriber and lightly hammer the point into the insert to lift the coil out of the thread pushing it into the centre of the hole.

As soon as you have it, get the nosey pliers on it and tug.

Re-tap the hole and you're good to go.

I got some real long nose pliers that stick their nose into anywhere .

as many others have stated picking out the lead thread and then try to uncoil the heli-coil with some needle nose vise grips.

I've done that before on #10 and below.  1/4 - 20's are stiff!

Make your self a pick with a drill blank I use a .125 dia. Sharpen one end to a long point.

Use a tack hammer to get behind the top coil.

Ive done a lot of these on military projects in for repair.
