5 axis surfacing

I am doing some 5 axis surfacing with the side of a bull end mill (tilt 90). The tool path runs with the radius of the cutter tangent to the surface. How can I make the tool path reach past the contact point so it is cutting up on the side of the cutter? The only thing I have been able to figure out is to lie to MasterCam and tell it my cutter has a larger radius.

The toolpaths I have been using are parallel and parallel to surface.

That's difficult to picture without a file... many times you need to extend your surfaces, or create additional surfaces to get the exact path you desire.

I think what you might be looking for is in the Utility page of the Parallel to Surface toolpath (and other "advanced" multiaxis toolpaths).  There is an option called Axial Shift that can allow you to drop the tool down further than the default calculation (not knowing what your part looks like though, Your Mileage May Vary  )

Throw together a sample file and put that up. Really hard to see what you are seeing when we can't see what you are seeing.

Also the lead / lag settings may accomplish what you want to do.

But as Reko stated, extending the surfaces is usually the easiest fix. 

 

If you could post your file here I'm sure someone will help you get there.
