i am looking for help with generating points on all endpoints of all lines, arcs or splines. could this be done using a C-hook. the reasoning behind this is that there are surface generators that work with cloudpoints but none ( that i know of ) that will work with an STL model. it would be nice to be able to generate point data at the endpoints of lines,arcs, splines of the STL model and then delete the lines,arcs,splines leaving behind a cloud point data set. this cloud point set could then be used to generate a surface feature. i know Mastercam can directly work with machining STL models but the idea is to create a surface from the STL model and then be able to export the surface to whomever needs it. ( is whomever one word or two). am i way off here or does this idea hold water. thanks for listening.

Iuse a technique that is not automated, but quite simple. I am assuming that the geometry is chainable, right? I create a new spline by chaining the existing geometry, and delete the original geometry. Then create points along entity. Simple enough?

Endpoints of arcs or splines could be scary... If you have an arc with 180 deg sweep, and connect the endpoints, you get a line through the center of the arc....

you should be able to write a VBScript to put points on all entities and then delete all but the points. Have you played with the VBS stuff yet?

with the script you could make it tolerance or distance based for placement on arcs and splines.

There should be a chook on the ftp called stl2surf or some such thing. Should solve your problem.
