You can use Mastercam's editor, Windows Notepad, Wordpad, Word, ect... As Hardmill said, any editor will do. Just be sure if you use anything other than a basic text editor such as Notepad, that you save the file as text not a binary file like a word .doc file. Rick

Thanks, I'll try that out. I'll admit the PDF's are linked nicely. I guess I'm just old school and find it easier to have my resources in print on my desk so I can easily read them while I have what I am programming/editing on the computer screen. It's just a preference of mine. Having hard copies keeps the mouse movements from application to application, back and forth, while I "experiment" to see if I can get the results I want, down to a minimum. I was told by a co-worker that you can set some switches in a post to have it more or less map the path it takes when processing and show that in the final output. He said he did this in V9 and I am trying to make X do it. I have changed zero's to one's and one's to zero's in the section with bug1$ and fastmode$ but seem to get no different output. What switches do I have to throw to have the post processor do this? Is it even possible? I am trying to figure out exactly how the logic flows through the post so I can make the setup sheet post create a file formatted like the ones our company has used for years. Years ago I was pretty decent in gw-basic, quickbasic, and Visual basic for DOS. (Yes, I'm a hair beyond the middle age hump) I never made the leap to windows programming and even though I have Visual studio at home, have done little more than install it. I believe that once I understand the program flow, i.e. where the post is entered, what is run first (psof?) ect... I will be able to make it do what I want. I have gotten the v9.1 Post processor reference guide from our re-seller but I hate pdf manuals. Hard copies are so much better to bounce around in whilst learning. Try turning off simulate cutter compensation in the backplot options. If I'm using control comp, the times don't display for me unless I uncheck that option. Rick

Auto save is a great thing. I was however referring to the Backup option in MR2. If you look at the configuration page that has autosave, there is a new to MR2 feature that allows Mastercam to create redundant backups. I have mine set to keep 3 copies. This allows me to have a backup of my last three saves. If the current one goes belly up, I can load one from the last time I saved. The auto save file is also backed up. So even if you don't save files regularly, you will have (or more) copies of the auto save file. The backup feature has gotten me out of a pickle more than once.

This has happened to me in the past as well. I don't tend to have the problem as much now though. With MR2, having backups enabled virtually eliminates the starting over fiasco (sp?). One other thing, I don't know if you run with multiple occurrences of X open at once or not, but if you do, this can cause problems. I only have one occurrence of X running at a time and my problems have virtually disappeared. Rick

If I recall correctly, the clock layout was done to mimic the motion of a sundial in the northern hemisphere. Sundials in the north cast a shadow that moves in a clockwise direction. Thus when clocks were invented, they were made to mimic this motion and the numbers were set to increment in what is now called a clockwise rotation. Maybe if clocks had been invented in the southern hemisphere, they would run the opposite direction. Rick

Corrupt config files are a known problem. One which caused several of my thinning hairs to fall out. If the solution ajmer presented you works, there are a couple of things to keep in mind when running X. 1. Only edit your configuration files when Mastercam is first started. If you want to change something after working on a project, save your project, exit and re-start Mastercam, then make your changes. 2. If you have a lot of changes in your configuration, I'd recommend what some other people as well as I have done. That is, once the changes are where you want them, make a backup copy of your configuration file... just in case. That way if the file gets corrupt, you don't have to start from scratch. This work around has worked well for me and I have seen those pesky errors go away since I started doing changes that way. YMMV Hope that wasn't too long winded and helped some. Rick

I agree wholeheartedly with Colin, I set my Autosave/Backups with the same settings other than the directory (folder) name they are stored in. Using this method works well for me also. BTW Colin, excellent how-to. Rick

I first started having this problem right after the update. see this post. The problem went from failing to load resources to buffer overrun's. I finally have all my settings finished so I'll be staying away from the config unless it's just on a fresh boot.

I have had this problem for some time as well. I have noticed also that it seems to happen much less when 1st started before opening a job. I have a config file that will generate the buffer overrun upon load if anyone is interested. Also, I save my config as a different name and use that as my active config file that way when the corruption happens, I just copy the original mcamx.config to my config file name and I'm back up and running with the original defaults. I don't always select the entire solid due to the size of the solids I work with. When you have large models with hundreds of solid faces, things slow down considerably as it checks faces that aren't even near where you are machining while generating the toolpath. I find myself unchecking faces next to the one I'm not sure of just to see if the edge between the two stays hilghlighted or not. I like the idea of shading a face when I select it this would immediately say "Yes, I'm selected" or "Nope, better get me too!" Just my two cents worth... Rick

Is there any way to prevent the autosave file from making backups when backups are enabled in MR2? I work with some fairly large files and with my autosave set to every 10 minutes to wait for it to make 2 saves and shift backups of the autosave seems like overkill. I like the backup idea when I actually save the file myself. It would have prevented an oops a co-worker made in MC9 a couple of days ago.

I am running X MR2 and have run into a problem. I have my own config file as there are two people on the computer I use (at different times of course ) I decided to check the colors and cancelled out of the menu (red X at bottom). Upon doing this, I got the error: "Failed to load resources from resource file, Please check your setup." When I clicked OK, Mastercam closed. I re-booted and re-loaded Mastercam only to find that any time I used the config, it would reply with the same message. The only way around it was to re-load the default config file, save it as mine, and then make my changes. I thought the problem was because I closed the config dialog box with the red X (Cancel) button instead of the green check (OK) button, however, I have had this problem three times now in two days as I try to get the config where I want it using the green check. I am usually changing shading or color settings when it happens. It seems the file is getting corrupted or it's not re-loading properly or something. I know I changed these settings several times in MR1 and never saw this error. Anyone have any ideas other than "don't play with the config file"? Thanks, Rick

Just a thought, you may want to make sure if you have antivirus running to disable it during the installation. I ran into problems with an install of X with my antivirus running. Rick

I have noticed it quite a bit as well. It would be nice if they even added that to the readme file on the demo disc. Something to the effect of: "Before installation, be sure to disable all antivirus and firewall software, be sure the user account you are installing from has administrative rights, and upon installation, remember to enable your antivirus and firewall programs." That would probably fix the bulk of the problems. Sometimes even experienced computer users forget the antivirus can complicate some software installs. Rick

Success!! I finally got the demo running!! I completely removed Mastercam X demo from my system. I then disabled Mcaffee virus scan, firewall, and even went to the msconfig utility and disabled all startup programs. I rebooted the system. I then re-installed the X Demo and violla... success. I'm not sure if it was the virus scan, firewall, or some other program that fires up at startup but apparently one of them was the cause of conflict. Thanks again so much for the help. Rick

I didn't think about the antivirus. I didn't get a chance to mess with it today but I will tomorrow. I'll try the uninstall, disable the antivirus stuff (McAffee) and re-install to see if that works. I had already tried the un-register / register with the X control panel applet and that didn't work. The applet just reports that it can't open the registry even though I have administrative rights. I've rebooted many times. I think it just isn't able to modify my registry for whatever reason. I know I can modify it manually, other programs seem to have no problem updating the registry as needed. I'm at a loss. I'll keep messing with it and if I get it going I'll post to let people know ... in case some other poor soul like myself runs into the same problem. I do appreciate all the help, Rick
