  1. Thee Rickster ™, you have a lot of control on how you cut shapes like this. Area roughing toolpath is still an option if you don't like the Opti path. Or you can set the retract in the Opti path so it acts more like the old path. Personally I think the algorithm is amazing with all the options it gives you. If you would like some examples just shot me an email with a file and I can throw some in it for you.

Remember i cut graphite, peel mill is unnecessary and would turn it off if i could

Area roughing does not do the outside of the component efficiently

I suppose i could do two paths, limit the opticor to do the outside and

    area rough for the inside.

    either way

Email is not an option, large file size

I could share desktop and a phone call, if that works for you?

    thanks Ben

  2. We have 5 seats here and no one had this issue.

For me personally, MC2017 has been the most stable version of Mastercam to date

I do realize that doesn't do a thing for the people suffering the Tool Manager crash though.

you stll have to save/close/restart 3 or 4 times a day when the cache bogs up an the simplest

of functions start getting confused or stop working

Never had the tool crash problem, 2017 been working pretty stable

for me accept for the above thing.

  3. You are likely suffering from the bug that is affecting some but not all users.....It has affected me....

If you haven't tried to install the Update 1, do that...it helped with some users but not all.....

There is an update 2 which is "very" close to being released that "should" clear this up......

I will say, I did repeatedly receive the crash dialog, that one you show, that is one I have not previously seen....

I hope thats not all they fixed.

the cache still build  up and you have to restart mastercam to get simple functions to

    work again like:

-select solid, no entities show up selected and wont regen(restart MC fixes it)

-move geometry to different level and nothing moves(restart MC fixes it)

-back plot shows holder selected, verify shows big fat default holder and shows a gouge(restart MC fixes it)

only been doing this behavior since the release of X......

there's a bunch more but you get the picture

  4. I had a problem with a file that i am working on in 2017.

First i designed the 6 components in SpaceClaim.

I had a windows error that when saving a .stp file that there

were too many characters in the file name string. seen this many times and

it is a widows problem they are aware of but wont fix(in win 7 anyways)

the location on my customer data server has to many characters in all the

folder name and in the name of the file i am saving(whether it is Spaceclaim or excel.)

So normally i back space some characters until it saves, and im good to go.

Well when i opened MC 2017 started importing the 6 step files i would get weird errors

like .mcam file does not exist and it would crash.

So i reopen the file and proceed until i eventually get all the .stp files in the .mcam and save.

So this morning i create a boundary and make an area roughing path with a bull mill,

hit go, and it crashes instantly. hmmmm, reselect machine definition and get a

.cam does not exist error and crash. so i try importing the same operation from another

    file and regen, crash.

So, also  everytime i open the file and hit regen on the only path, it crashed immediately.

(scratching head i drag the file to my desktop)

I open the file and hit regen......BINGO, it regens

    I create another path....BINGO....

So I get IT manager to shorten the names of the folders,  in the file string of folders, on the server,

    by about 20 characters.

I open the file that keeps crashing and repeat what i did with the file on my desktop

and VIOLA i completely finish everything WITHOUT one single CRASH

    Phew..... what a morning

So i thought i would share that in case anyone ha seen the cannot save, name too long

error in which any file being saved. (Excel, word, MC or what ever.)

    Regards

    Rick

  5. Gcode, we do that, plus the date,  while training a programmer up to speed.

We save all our temp files in MC.

Each component has its own machine group and toolpath group

Seeing the temp file allows us to know the temp was actually performed

If it wasn't then it is still there to commence in-case someone closes the file

without saving before it was competed.

Also they can be deleted or not at any time.

  6. As far as I know you can't change the size.

Some idiot decided it looked better to have all your stuff a jumbled mess.

They probably forgot to hit the return key in between Line and Parallel so it had the room

    for a larger icon.

    ex:

    Line

    Parallel

    instead of

    Line Parallel

But now it cant be fixed until the next major release or two.

  7. I guess it depends on what you're using the software for.

X8 provided a huge improvement in 5X capability

X9 added more.. and allowed me to run verify on huge stls

The work I do today wouldn't run at all in X7

All 3 axis mold work, no 5 axis in my department

    MC pitfalls in that regard,

for ex: Powermills 5 axis has been awesome for every release

  8. I would like to know what tool manager problems you folks are having. I have made tool library in the Tool Manager and mad them from inside and added and subtracted and custom tools and not had one crash from it.

Every version we go thru some crash like crazy and then other that don't. I don't have like most. I think X7 I had a lot during and after release and it got much better on X8 and up for me. these days are far and beyond that I get one. I am happy. but not for you folks that have them all the time as I know like you folks really can screw up the flow of pathing.

Good luck guys. Hope to see some you at IMTS

See, X7 has been solid for me.

X8 and 9 not as solid and nothing 'really new' so i stayed at X7.

  9. Amidst all the odd changes and Mastercam's idea to take simplicity away in 2017...How on gods green earth do you change levels?! I can't figure out how to move geometry to another level; the ease of being able to "right click" in the levels box for the entire X series and even back into the V series and having the change level box pop up was beyond convenient. Does it still exist?
