Does anyone out there in MC land know if there is a working demo disk for SolidWorks avalible.

A saleman in Ohio told me that if you go to solidworks website you can get a 90 day disk and learn it at home.

Don't know about a free demo available online. Might want to check out a local reseller, talk to them, see if you can grab a demo copy.

 

SolidWorks does interface real well with MasterCam. Can import the solid itself or prints without much hassle. I think there's even a plugin for SolidWorks called MasterCam Direct or something like that, which allows you to be working on a part in SW and straight from there boot MasterCam and start writing toolpaths!

Been using the two together for a week now, works great. With that SWdirect add in you can take .sldprt files right into MC.

OK, I have a question. Please pardon my ignorance. If we use Solid Works, is it better than using Solids Option available for Mastercam? Or are they used in tandem? Our company actually has both & I have often wondered which is best to use. As it is now, I haven't used either. Please enlighten me.

I use SW to design, I find it much easier than MC solids, I use the solids to manipulate, and generate tool paths in MC once I transfer the file over.

 

Once you use SW for a bit it is very fast, nothing comes close IMHO (well... maybe ProE, on a good day).

It is actually better to use both SolidWorks for design and Mcam with Solids. Why continually go back to SolidWorks when you have a simple change to make with the solid part (say a fillet size or hole location) and you already have toolpath on it? Mcam Solids allows the programmer to manipulate the design and then just regenerate the toolpath. With the SolidWorks to Mcam Direct converter (free of charge), you will be able to bring the history of the SolidWorks part into Mcam. If there's a feature you don't want to machine, just suppress it. HTH

Hey Threept82, You might want to check at a local community college bookstore. My college has a student version of SW. If i remember right you can't print from it, but everything else works the same. I think it was about 90 dollars.

I'm not going to say it's not possible, because hey, if we did not know that "anything is possible" before this year, after the Lakers loose in the Finals, Bo Sox win 4 straight after being down 3-0 to the YANKEES to win the World Series, GW wins re-election despite a concerted effort by the media, Hollyweird Elite, and every other ABB out there, we know it now. But.... I think it's VERY unlikely, especially in the forseeable future, the people in chartge are still young and it seems to have been a labor of love for them. A labor of love is always tough to part with.
