tapping question

I just broke a 10/32 tap and was wondering..

when I select my tap cycle ideally I want to go down a certain distance,reverse, then go down a further distance.I need to clean off the tap.. its filling up and breaking. My question is can I copy and paste the tap cycle and just change my depth? Will the threads align or will it screw up the threads? Im doing the work on a vf2 haas and figured I would ask verses trial and error!

Any help?

Yes you can copy and change the z depth. BUT your HAAS has to be set up for repeat tapping.

In the control perameters there is a switch for "repeat rigid tap" (I believe it is an option) With this on, the HAAS will orientate the spindle each time before tapping a hole making it possible to repeat tap a thread as long as you start from the same position.

if you machine has rigid tap it should repeat as long as you use a regular holder no tapping head. then just repeat with a deeper z depth.

I've done that on both of my Haas mills (VF-2ss and VF-9)...I didn't know there was a parameter switch to repeat the rigid tap cycle but I'll look for it.

 

I know that the Haas manual says that you can't do it, but I have never seen a problem with cross threading whenever I've done it.

when i was at the haas class we where told the spindle will orient at the same position if you start at the same plane. i never had a problem either when i have adjusted thread depth

We've got mori's with fanuc controllers and I can just put a Q value in the tapping cycle so it will peck tap. I don't know if you can do that on a haas though.

Can you peck tap on a Fanuc with ridge tap? New control. Oi I think. The machine is leadwell v50i.

I used the spiral tap. I had a thru hole and with chips able to go out the bottom seemed to work well.

The spiral point tap is good for thru holes only, but use a spiral flute tap (has flutes like a drill) for blind holes.

Yes you can peck tap on a Fanuc control. Just add the Q value.....
