surface milling

I'm using surface - finish - parallel on a part that has multiple surfaces. On one of the flat, horizontal surfaces Mcam is plunging straight down in the Z axis. Everything else looks OK but this. It's doing it at 4 different points on the part.

 

Any thoughts?

In the Operation Manager, click on the geometry icon and click on Show Drive Surfaces. Possibly a surf is not selected???

 

Also, on the Parameters 3rd page, click Advanced and set 'Only between surfaces'.

Is it doing this on ONE of the surfaces four times, or doing one plunge on four different flat surfaces ?

Exactly what version are you running.

Is is V9.1 Mr0304?

There was a problem with the NCI output when used with older posts. It would add crazy Z moves.

I did "show surface" and it is selected.

I tried "only between surfaces"

 

It's doing it on one of the surfaces four times.

 

It's sort of a rectangular surface(flat). In each of the four corners it plunges down.

 

and I was wrong on the version it's 9.0

Is your boundry outside the surface edges?

If the boundry is bigger than than the selected surfaces the tool can drop down a surfaces to the boundry limit.By default MC puts the Centre of the tool on the boundry line.

Call your dealer and get ver 9.1 sp2, it's free.

Many bugs have been fixed in 9.1 sp2. This may be one, also ask your dealer about this problem, he should be able to help.

loraxian, your flat surface is not selected as a drive surface. Add it to the drive surfs, regen and you will be fine.

Same here. It's usually better to reselect surfaces when you run into problems such as this. Beats the heck out of banging your head against the monitor.

+1 on selecting All surfaces.

 

I generally do this unless there are thousands of surfaces that do not need to be checked. In that case I will section out my areas with color.

 

A few extra won't hurt crunchtimes.
