MR1 Crash on save

This has happened to me three times now since moveing to MR1.

When I hit the save button MC crashes, not every time just Occasionally. This would not be that big a problem except when it happens it wipes out my file. The file is still there but it is empty. No geometry no toolpaths, nothing. I lost 10 hours work yesterday. I am currently waiting for our "IT" guy to retrieve Wednesday's backup.

Is anyone else haveing this problem? I have fowarded one of these crash reports to CNC allready.

I've something strange to report here. After seeing this discussion I tried Winamp. It seems to consume less resources as promised and sounds great all the time (maybe a little static while rotating dynamic).

I've never had problems with MCAM crashing during save and leaving an unusable file until today. I lost 2 hours of work today. I am now using a combination of Autosave and "Second Copy" to leave 20 incremental saves (10 min intervals for now) in a special folder. That shouldn't happen again...

I've seen a lot of "LOST FILE" posts here over many months and wonder how many were using Winamp ?

This is something I posted in another thread. I am very happy with my new backup method. The only downside is the wierd pause while it is autosaving. It can take forever on some of my larger files. Better to wait for autosave than to start over. I would only use autosave to save as a different name though. It seems to me if you use it to overwrite your existing file you will be setting yourself up for the same problem.

In my autosave dialog I have "C:MASTERCAM BACKUPMASTERCAM BACKUPMCX BACKUP.MCX" and it seems to "stick". Just remember to use the + (apply) when setting it... I have MCAM9 dumping to the same folder.

From there I use Second Copy to automatically copy this folder to yet another folder every 10 min. It makes the number of copies I specify without overwriting anything...

I use the Autosave function so save my work because when I get rolling along I forget to save.

I haven't had a system crash in a while, but I use the Archiver.vbs for a back-up in case I get the zero file save.

Archiver uses WinZip to zip the file, names the zip file with the part no., date, and time so it doesn't overwrite your last save, and puts it in a back-up folder or whatever file path you choose.

You can set-up Mcam with a hotkey to make the save process quicker.

This has saved me countless hours of re-programming.

I re-named the file Qsave.vbs. I saved a copy of it zipped-up with a trial copy of Winzip and the Winzip Command Line Interface along with instructions on how to install and use it on the Mcam ftp folder VB_Scripts.

The filename is Qsave.zip

John,

I think you're asking for trouble with that. Rekd created a VB script back in V9 called Qsave. Two files with the same name floating around the forum that do two different things. I think it's gonna cause more confusion than it's worth.

Interestingly enough, Rekd created a backup VB script that zips (like you described) and he also created a VB script that would automatically save the file in the same directory without prompting for "are you sure?......are you really sure????" type saves. That's why is was called qsave, or quick save.

I should check with him on that.

I thought when I got the file it was named Archiver.vbs.

With the Winzip Command Line Interface all you do is hit a hotkey and it automatically zips and saves the file. Nothing to overwrite because the filename is different.

Hey Matt, if you see this thread can you comment on it?

Just to clarify, since I think one of us is missing something...

Rekd created 2 different scripts. One zips and the other saves the current MC9 file as an MC9 file. From what I can tell, you've taken the file that zips and renamed it to the name of the one that saves the MC9 file. Now if someone asks for the qsave script, they may not get what they were looking for.

Does that make sense or am I missing something?

I looked around on the ftp site for Rekd's Archiver.vbs and couldn't find one, so I guess I should change the name back to Archiver.vbs for the ftp site.

If anybody has a problem with that, let me know.

Thad, how well does Mick's Savebackup.vbs work?

It worked real nice. We had a time period a year or more ago when we kept on getting corrupted files (0kb files). Things mysteriously fixed themselves so I quit using it. That was a while ago. I believe it time stamped the file name.

I believe it's on the FTP if you want to give it a try.
