thread milling for helicoil inserts

Hello,

Is anyone out there thread milling for helicoil inserts? The inserts I need to make threads for is for 5/8-11 & 1/2-13 in 7075 AL. Any insight or cutter recommendations would be appreciated.

Regular threadmill I would think, I use Scientific.

 

Adjust your minor Ø and major Ø for the correct Heli-coil size and cut it.

 

Haven't done a heli-coil yet but don't see why it should be any different.

Any particular reason you can't tap them? Just curious.

Vardex has a great line of inserts, and well documented, from UN to Pipe and metric.

Tap the hole ,I have never heard of anyone thread milling for a Helicoil insert.

Heli-coil uses xxxx sizes and tap drills, they also provide the tap to achieve proper fit. It's one of those propietary things that needs to be done with the correct tools.

Not all suppliers are like this but most are.

Helicoil ESPECIALLY in Aluminum!!!

 

The pitch is identical so there is no reason why it cannot be threadmilled. Drill the hole to the reccommended Minor Diameter and threadmill. Simple as that.

Threadmill is waaay more reliable and repeatable as well as faster.

John I will agree to dis agree with you ...not worth arguing about . In my view it can be done faster with taps , thats just my thinking.

Gotta go with John on this one. Threadmilling is much faster than tapping.

We have thread milled as small as 1/4-28. Best thing we've found for aluminum and magnesium castings. NCI is no problem, same pitch with larger diameter, look up the major dia. and program to that.
