but i noticed with pocket rough that it is not always climb cutting

trying to add some surfaces in the areas so tool does not roll into slots but how do you get them to flow with the profile of the surface your are trying to cut

thats it lacky how ya do that. i know you said use the coons surface. i was trying to select the the splines the made up the profle of the channel but didnt quite understand what it was asking for. i.m i going in the right direction.

ive tried a surface finish contour on the sides and set the gap tol real high and this seems to keep the tools from dipping in the ej pin holes. is this a common practice with the gap setting.

actually, when I saw where you were wanting them, I went another direction, sorry to confuse you....although the Coons would work as well. On the top surf, first i created edge curves on all edges. Then I Un-Trimmed the original surface, and Re-Trimmed it to the outside, or boundary curves. On the bottom half, I created edge curves on the edges next to the hole, and did simple Ruled surfaces. At the very bottom, there is a very small surface,.....That is a Coons Patch using two edge curves and two points to create it. The Coons Patch is a neat surface to use for odd areas, once you learn how to construct it... selection order is critical. Look in your Help File for "Creating A Coons Surface" Once you learn how to do it, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it!

I, personally, haven't found a good use for the Gap Settings. They don't seem to affect the type of toolpaths that I use on the parts that I do. I would just use cover sufaces on the holes I wanted the tool to stay out of. Either that or Check Surfaces.

i was able to get the top surface like you explained lacky but having trouble with the bottom surface. that way of creating edge curves i didnt know about thanks i will use that in future . i used to select chain the wire frame and save to another level that was a pain.that will really come in handy

how do you change/check surface norms

Modify/Normal...Surface Normal is set to whichever direction the arrow points. Just click on the surface you want to check, click again changes

man this is turning out to be tough . the way i see it is doing almost one surface at a time. cant seem to get any surface toolpath the way i want without gouging or something else

I'm curious, why are you tring to machine individual surfaces?

 

 

How is the part held to the machine? Vise, clamps?

having trouble getting the tool to do what i want with more than one surface. more like a section at a time
