Tapping Question

Recommended Posts

I am tapping a bunch of blind holes that are drilled .8 inches deep and tapping with a 10-32 sprial point 2 flute Elektralube tap. I am tapping Aluminum 6061, and I keep breaking taps. I had this problem before when I was tapping SAE 1141 with the same setup with no problem, but not I am getting broken taps. Any ideas on how to tap them better or more efficiently?

This happened to me once in Mori-seiky long ago .

On one specific machine .

We were breaking taps in holes .

On all the other similar machines same program -OK

We were using floating holders -go figure ? :headscrath:

The end of story -soon we found that spindel bearings were bad .

So there is an easy explanation -on reverse backlash of bad bearings pull the tap up and Ka-boom !
