How may of you get to see your program?

I seldom watch, although I like stopping by the machines and asking the operators "why did it do that?". Love the expression on their face.

Always see them run, unless it is a proven 'recut' program.

I usualy program and set them up, unless its on the vertical. But anything in the cell I setup and run. that way I can see any wasted moves plus I have to schedule the job in anyway when it goes to production.

Being that we're a prototype/model shop and I'm the only guy that knows how to program and operate...it's all on me. Can you say "job security "?

Used to watch everything prove out, but since I'm up to 11 mills now to program short run parts for, I seldom see it unless somethings wrong. +planning, +tooling, +part time insp., +++. I don't have the time I used to.

I also work in a prototype R&D environment so I do all my own setups and run 100% of my own programs.

 

The downside is that if there's a problem they don't have to look too far to find the guy to blame...

i get to watch some of my programs run when time allows. wish i could watch more because sometimes you miss things that could cut down on cycle time and most of my operators wont say a word.

I proof out about 90% of the programs here unless it is a trim change or something minor. All 5 axis stuff also.

I run all of my programs. We're a research shop and all parts are a 1 of a kind item. Mastercam is more like the handles of a manual machine for me. I will never run a program again once the part is off my machine. I don't delete them just so we have reference of speeds and feeds for similar parts that show up, or to help me remember how I cut something.

I run all my mold programs and part programs. We only have 4 machinist on the floor 2 of them are manual machinist. The other guy pick up on what i do not finish.

Wow. Decent diversity between shops, eh? From where I stand I don't know how you could possibly just program and never run anything, or barely anything.

 

I think that is what I enjoy about my job (although sometimes, I think this is all I enjoy about it...). I get to program everything, fight with the engineers on lots, and run the first (at least the first, usually first few) of everything.

 

I am at the top of the ladder for new machines that come in the door for training and such, thus making my responsibility to train others in house to use the machines, read the code (a bit) and be efficiant operators.

 

I enjoy the dual job. I once thought I would love to only program, but I don't know if I could do that. I think my eyes would get to sore staring blankly at my little 17" lcd...

Heh. Not only do I run what I program, but I get to shovel the chips too. The joys of a small, part-time shop.
