Non-Canned Rigid Tapping

How can I program a (rigid) tapping cycle without it being a canned cycle? Basically I am looking for point-to-point method for tapping. Is it as simple as I think it is by stopping the spindle and reversing it on the way out? Never done it like that (yet).

I am using tool tip point control and was told that canned cycles are not supported. Not sure if that's true, but for now I can't check it on the machine.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I wasn't able to make it work using tool tip programming (G43.4) so I had to go back and use a canned cycle for rigid peck tapping using a standard G43 TLO code and use G68 Coordinate rotation to get the desired results. Definitely not the way I want to do this in the future especially when the angles get funky;
