I see a bad habit if you start adjusting change points like that. If you have other things going on past this point you run the risk of getting a gouge or something the machine is not going to like. If you do it using geometry then you are sure that what you get out on the machine is what you want.

 

I will however recommend you have the machine checked. All CNC lathes should be able to cut a part with a tail stock and do it cutting a straight part. The exception being skinny or very long parts and you can not use a follow rest, 2nd turret, or Steady rest. If it is a smaller part then your spindle could be out and can be fixed as well. Most times you put a 4" dia x 14" long piece of aluminum in the machine and take a test cut and adjust the headstock until the taper is out. If always cutting steel then I would use steel for my test piece to allow for the tool pressure that steel will have over the aluminum.

 

This is just my thoughts on this.
