The FX4600 is what I have in my Desktop & it works quite well. If I read your post right malibu, you are asking about a "loptop" card? Not sure what works well in a laptop. You might look through the benchmark thread. I know there were several laptops listed there.

I think at a certain point it becomes overkill to get the really expensive ones. I've used an FX5500 and it wasn't any better than an FX3500 running Mastercam X2, Solidworks, or Alias Studiotools.

After a point its the rest of your system that can hold back the cards true power IMO. Although the 3500 is an outstanding card, I use a 1500 and 3500 at work and def notice differances.

The company put a 1500 in my machine and I think that it's great... I actually had to slow down my Robotmaster simulation so that I could see what was going on.

 

It keeps Solidworks running nicely too.

I'm running FX3450's here and at home.

(got a killer deal on a Dell refurb)

The FX-2500M is what you'll see in most Dell

workstaion grade laptops

I recently purchased a Dell M6300 and it comes with a : NVIDIA® Quadro FX 1600M 256MB discrete.

 

It has been working good for me in fact it is faster at running the same toolpaths than my Dell Dimension 4700 at work. They both have 4G ram the M6300 has 2.6 processor and the dimension has a 3.0 processor with a FX1400 video card.

I have a quadro FX4600 and I'm totally disapointed, IMHO is a waste of money. Other less expensive cards perform as good as the expensive ones with MCX2.

 

May be in the past with V9, cards played a big difference but not any more.

What kind of files are you working with? If you have any complex surxxxxe geometries and big files, (by big i mean most of my files are that just the part with no tool paths are over 100-150 megs). I can put any card in and notice big differances, maybe your not taxing the low end cards enough to see a big bonus to move up in cards. Which may not be a bad thing everyones work is differant.
