engraving on a contour

Is there any way of engraving letters on a contour such as an ellipse? This would be a flat, centerline type engraving like you would see on a trophy plaque.

Can you please explain a little more? will the engravng path be a flat 2-d path ON a piece of geometry (elipse maybe). Or would it be engraving AROUND the perifery of a piece of geometry (like an elipse

It will be a flat (2-D) engraving. I would like it to follow a shape other than just horizontal, verticle or an arc. Can I get it to follow a chain? I can build the geometry, but can't find an easy way to make the words follow that shape.

If you have the surface geo of the part you are talking about lay the 2D lettering over the top program it as 2d contour turn off tool left or right comp.

 

Then you can project the 2D path on the surface that you want this engraved on to.

Heh, no easy way. Create the letters as you were and choose the easiest orientaion, horizontal, whatever. Define only ONE letter at atime. Then Modify/Drag/translate-rotate Each letter to the right position. Not 100 % accurate but you can get it really close.

You'll most likely see this functionality added during a V9 point release.

Both Corel and Illistrator allow text to follow a contour. The contour can be easily created or imported, and the text can be exported as a DXF

Coincidence, I was looking for this eaxact feature today. I could not even find option to create lettering at an arc, where is this setting found?

You'll be able to do this when V9.1 comes out. Maybe find someone with a beta and try it to see how well it works.

Hello again...

 

The one thing I noticed about this feature was that when I did my test it worked better with no offset off of the chain. Try it, see if it works better, even if you have to offset the curve first.

I've played with it a bit when I received beta 1 and I agree offset the chain first, your spacings will work out much better.
