Facing by rotating C axis on 5 axis trunnion machine?

I've got a big round part that exceeds the Y+ travel on my 5 axis vertical. I'd like to face it by feeding the C axis in inverse time while feeding in the Y+ direction toward the center. Is there a stock toolpath that will do this without too much trouble? I've never had an issue getting the 5 axis output I want, but I figure it's better to ask before I spend 30 minutes dinking around with it.

on some machines, this is called grinding.

  • one way to do it is create spiral geometry at the pitch you want and then use a 2d contour path to follow the spiral.
  • another is to use 5ax parallel to curve with spiral motion and 4 ax output.

don't you need to use axis substitution to supress the X motion and restrict it to Y and C

morgh between 2 curves, I "mill" turn all the time using that. sweet cause you can tilt the head to eliminate drag from the back of the tool. 1 or 2 degree's is all you need

You got a file i can look at ?? numbskull :lol:

This is what I was expecting to do. Tried two or three combos of axis sub for two minutes and then just switched to a 3 inch facemill to get that extra half inch that I couldn't reach. ;)

I'd still be interested in how to get it to work though, 'cause I've got a bigger part coming up that I won't be able to reach even with a bigger facemill.

I post just a snipet. this is for a horazontal E-tower but you get the hint.

note the 2 degree lead angle on the B axis as C rotates and X travels to center
