Tool Recomendation

Hey Guys,

I have a part that has a 6" bore running through the part 35" long there is a slot running all the way through the bore it's .39 wide x .2 deep, it guides the part that moves in the bore and stops it from spinning. We normally send out the part for this operation to be done. They use some sort of shaper or broaching machine. There is a intersecting hole that the slot breaks into so I don't need a tool 35" long I need half that 17.5" I can cut the slot from each side of the bore.

My question is has anyone seen a attachment that I can use on our HMC to broach or cut this slot?

I was thinking of making some sort of bolt on attachment with a carbide broaching tool on the end and making a drilling program with .005 step over and either drag or push the cut using honing oil for lubrication. If there was a tool to buy that would be better cause I don't have the time to make one.

TIA,

Greg

The best I could do is buy their inserts and try to make a holder like their's but longer.

That is what I have done in the past.

Unless you want to do this kind of work regularly, or unless it is a production job you want to keep in house, I would send it out to a broaching shop where that is what they do well.

Trying to scrape metal at that length is problematic. You will go through a lot of inserts and spend a lot of time trying different approaches, when you could be spending your time doing what you are already good at.
