CORNER ROUNDING OR SPECIAL GEOMETRY TOOLS

I was wondering how people explain corner rounding tools or other special tools like tapered endmills to Mastercam. Most of my tool paths are 2D with these tools. What I have been doing is defining the tool with the tip or pilot diamter. Any more that that and Mastercam thinks the largest tool diameter is the actual diameter. so then it machines with the largest diameter and not the pilot diameter. This is crappy because it doesn't always verify correctly, and the tool paths are not comped correctly. Just curious what other people are doing. Thanks.

I just draw it as a custom tool.

Both Radius Mill and Taper mill are available in the tool libray.

 

If I want Z0 to be the top of the radius I make a custom tool, otherwise, the default Radius Mill

works fine.

I use the top of the radius as my zero that is why I create a custom tool.

Done both custom tools and the tools listed for it in the tool library. Just make sure to define Zero on the tool for the person running the machine.

Go to "Harvey Tools". Best corner rounding tool out there. Dimensions are repearable tool to tool. No need for the operator to adjust everytime the job is set up!

We actually use harvey most of the time. I use the pilot Dia for the definition of my tool so that it makes the proper tool offset in mastercam. That is what I was having trouble getting straight. Mastercam was using the largest diamter of the tool and not the pilot diamter.

Not so. Define the tool as a corner rad tool.Flute length is radius + .003. Always for harvey. Pilot dia is the "tool dia" used to generate the path. The tool od is what the tool is. It works perfect. No need for a custom tool defination.
