High speed machining with high speed tools

Recommended Posts

I want to note that i succesfully run High speed machining with high speed tools

I tried 2 flutes 25 mm hss end mill (aka slot mill )depth of cut 80 mm sidestep 3mm S28oo rpm f1100 mm/min

milling pockets in plates one cut full depth AL 6061

Enter by helix rad 2mm angle 3 mm full feed .

The tool proved to have great tool life great chip extraction very small spindel load

and it is CHEAP !

wE HAVE LOTS OF THEM !

Good usage especially for big machines with low RPM

This cutting conditions is only first try next time i PLAN TO BE be more aggresive

What is your opinion ?

tHE TRICK IS DO NOT USE HOG MILLS

Hog mills split the chips into small granulated pieces and

when the depth of cut is big they are not extracted good

while with a regular end mill you have good nice light chips that

water flows them off easily .

Thru tool is the best option but in old big machines you hardly find one

I use depth of cut 3 mm less than flute height if I have appropriate

tool

Ive got a similar project coming up with a 1/2 mill and 3000 max rpm.

Dude has a fanuc 3000a control. old dinosaur with a 45 taper (yeah 45)

Ill keep you posted with the results

One pro for using HSS in this situation High speed neets lots of memory

If you dnc it with high feeds it will fell drastically cause DNC will not be able to

keep going after the feed of f7000 mm/min or more but will keep with 1000mm/min .

So if you have no memory wnough high rate of dnc translation and fast machine you will never be able to

use Solid tools as it recomended .

So why not to use HSS instead ?
