ramping up

One way you could do it is to program a 2D Contour Ramp toolpath and save the backplot geometry. Then make a 3D Contour toolpath using that geometry but chain it from the bottom up. I think you would want the 2D contour toolpath to be a conventional cut so that when you selected it going the other direction it would climb mill.

Maybe you could let us know what you are trying to do so that we could find the best solution.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. What we ended up doing was creating a helix and using that geometry for our tool path. We also had to create a circle at the top and bottom so we could get one full rev before ramping. The lead ins and outs worked good doing it this way. We had to turn off 'infinite look ahead'.

In this application we are grinding glass (quartz) and are using diamond tooling. We are cutting a vertical shaft that has a boss at the top and wanted to start from the bottom so we could finish up the bottom side of the boss. I've attached a screenshot.

Thanks again,

M

I have done this before when using a slitting saw to rough upward on some sort of feature. I ended up doing the ramp path downward like normal, then backplotted and in backplot i hit the button which saves the toolpath geo as wireframe, then you can chain that path in the reverse direction. Now the trick here is that you have to run the tool with comp set to off but this should work for you. There are some other methods which may accomplish this too but without seeing a part file I cant recommend anything else. hope this helps
