If it `ll be me I`ll go for AMD MP 2800 dual processor 2 gig ram

Or Athlon XP 3000 .THe rest like Jay mentioned except LCD .

I would go with good quality 19 or 21 `` conventional display like LG

THe minimum Athlon XP 2000 with 512 Ram

(BTW it this is my home pc Athlon xp2000 with 512 DDR ram outperforms in Mastercam tasks my work comp Intel PIV 2400 with 1 gig ram with other stuff similar ).

Iskander teh love my AMD

Too add, if you go the AMD route and your shop doesn't replace computers often, don't skimp on cooling. AMD CPUs run much hotter than their Intel counterparts and nothing kills hardware components more painfully than heat. I'd recommend a big CPU heatsink, good compound (like Arctic Silver) and reliable front and rear case fans, along with the CPU fan.

Go with LCD monitor. Do not buy twenty year old technology that kills your eyes. Trust me on this one. We just switched from 22" CRT to 20" IBM LCDs. My eyes use to hurt after eight hours of looking at the CRT with 85MHz refresh rate (the highest) and now I sit in front of our LCD at work and home for more than 14 hours at a time and don't even rubb my eyes anymore. Not to mention how mych sharper the image and spacially text is. Save your eyes guys and headaches. I was getting headaches at least twice a week. Now I don't remeber tha last time I had a headache. The 20" IBM LCD were little pricey, but I got a UltraSharp DELL 18" LCD for home ($479) and the screeen is amazing. It's shrper than my 19" year old ViewSonic that I geve away. After using LCD at work I could not look at crappy pulsating CRT I had at home. Not to mantion that the DELL LCDs are brighter than most CRTs. Who ever tells you that CRT screens are better is doing it because he can't affort any thing better. Just read any review on the net. Find me one that recommends CRT over LCD.

Micheal,

You can go the the Dell Workstaion website

and build a workstaion with

3 gig p4 and 800 mhz front side bus

1 gig of 400 mhz ram

a Quadro FX-500 128 meg video card

a 40 meg ATA hard drive

WIN 2K or XP Pro OS

It will cost you about $1700.

Check out the Precision 360

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/c...s=04&l=en&s=bsd

beav700 is right about LCD monitors.

I'm running and NEC 21in CAD monitor

and a Samsung SyncMaster 191i LCD side by side

The viewing area is identical and the LCD is much easier on the eyes. It takes up 1/5 the desk space

uses 1/3 the power, puts out almost no heat and

cost $40 less that the 21 in tube monitor.

The LCD's picture is not quite as good, but the

benifits far outway that in my opinion.

I'm also running a Quadro FX-500 video card.

(bought it from Amazon.com for $280)

SolidWorks and NVIDIA worked together to opitmise

the Quadro FX series of video cards for SW 2004.

I've still got SW 2003 so I can't comment on that

aspect.

Here's a link to a good write up on Mastercam hardware requirements

What about gaming ?

plasttav, this not personal but this not gaming this cad-cam there is a diffrence.

I would not say for bussness to buy a gaming box to do manufatureing.

Like Beav700 has stated much easer on the eyes.

after a long day looking at a screen this makes a diffrence.

And there is higher end LCD's that are greate for Gaming motion.

Mikej, you can not go wrong using the AMD by any means.

As for a Dual as I know SW does not support Dual CPU,s at this time eather. you might want to cheack.

Other wise save some money for more Ram and a nicer monitor & CPU speed.

The gap is closing when it comes to gaming. The only game I had a problem with was Allien VS Predator 2. There is some part of the game where pitch black where with my CRT I could turned Contrast low and brightness high and see some traces of the environment surrounding me. I could not do that with my LSD. If you refer to the ghosting effect (trailing), that's no longer an issue with the new monitors with .16 response time or better.

I don`t like LCd`s ,that`s my personal preference .

I don`t play games at work but I don`t like LCD`s anyway .

I will not buy it for myself .

For such money I can buy super good 19`` display.

21 `` is too big IMHO cause exists the optimum distance between the eyes and screen and it is 2 big for 21 .

I asked about gaming cause if the display can stand the games like Unreal Tournament 2003 good it will be good for CAD -CAM 2 in my humble opinion .

UT2003 is my benchmark program !

I'm reall happy with my Samsung 19in. ($590???)

You can get a Samsung 21in for about $1200

with rebates now.

The 19 looks pretty small in the store, but

on your desk, there's a whole lot of realestate there.

My 19 in LCD has exactly the same viewing area as my 21in tube.

You have to be careful buying LCD screens.

There are 3 different quality levels (these Samsungs are midrange). The high end is still

very expensive, and the low end is useless

for CAD/CAM.

Well been my experience that when the other proecessors started on the market they couldn't handle complex cruching. I know they have go better but just like was stated other heat up more and just personal preference and been good to me over the years. I have had p1,p2,p3,and p4 and all have done good for me and give me little problems where as I have heard horror stories of other processors.
