Was curious of your views on the fact that as it stands now as of December 1st New York will start impoosing a tax on cigarettes and gasoline sold on reservations through out the state. Didn't we sign a treaty with them like a 100 years ago? How can we, the USA, or the State of New York do this? The last time this was spoken of the Indians blocked the turnpike with flamming tires.

This comming from a state that recently passed a no smoking in public buildings law and is also kicking around the idea of making smoking in your own vehicle illegal. As well as stating that 75% of New York State residents are non-smokers.

Not sure if CT is the same way, but are the Indians getting the tobacco and gasoline tax free on the reservations? If so why is it that the gas station @ the casino could charge somebody .20 more per gallon of gas than a station 2 miles away? Also the price of a pack of cigarettes is $8.58. Is this convenience or price gouging?

Living in a town that is roughly 10 miles from a reservation alot of people in the are buy smokes and gas at these convience stores. Gas is usually .10 to .15 cents difference a gallon and smokes are a different ball game. Here in Bradford a pack of name brands will cost you anywhere from $3.50 to $5.00 a pack. I can go on the res and get a carton for $22.50. Big difference.

I don't know about your states, but in Cal, the Indians are livin' large!

I don't know if they're citizens of the U.S. or not, but if they are, they should be paying taxes as well as the rest of us.

If they're not, do they have visas to be off their reservations and in 'this country' legally?

Think about it... They get all the beni's of being residents of this country, but none of the burden? Especially when they're making the TAX FREE money they're making here in Cal, where' it's illegal to gamble.

Anyone who thinks the Indians have it all should try spending a day in their shoes. Look around the shop you work in. Any Indians working there? To a lot of us it seems unjust they don't pay taxes(myself included). Those are the deals our forefathers made and we should respect them. How unjust would it be if someone with bigger and better guns than yours came onto your property took all you had and gave you a little reserved place the size of a dog house to live on and make a living out of?

I don't think these guys need us crapping on them whether on not we PERSONALLY did anything to them.

Every time I make a trip home to NY, I get flooded with orders.

Name brand smokes

Marlboro

Newport

and all the others, they ship down from the U.S.

$8. U.S. dollars a carton.

The locale produced version, have no tax on them, $6. U.S. dollars a carton.

I think G W Bush, needs more money for his sandbox, 87 Billion & counting!

Thanks

I agree with ya Rekd, and I'll bite my tongue before I say much more. It's illegal in WI to gamble off res. also, but I'm seeing mini casinos at every corner now. I'm not sure how that can be.

A few years ago our Gov. tried to show he had a set of stones and increase the fees for the gaming rights to $100million per year. His stones looked real small when they signed the contract for $1.3million. They may not pay taxes, but they throw a lot of weight in our government. Who would fight for them if terrorists hit their buildings?

There's a $40,000 truck around here with res. plates that say "WGN BRNR". I can't believe the state issued that!!

That's all I've got to say about that.

Ok, lemme clarify a few things.

First, what happened to the indians several hundred years ago was wrong. Period.

I don't think it was right, but I wasn't there and I don't expect to be held accountable for it. I will not take blame or carry the responsibility for something someone I never knew did, so that whole "We have done nothing but screw them" scenario doesn't wash with me. I haven't screwed them one bit!

It's done and there's not much we can do to change it. If it were another country that had done it, with different leaders, it would have been a lot worse I'm sure. All things considered, they got it pretty good. They've got more freedoms than other 'citizens' have.

Also, I'm part German, are you going to say it's my fault Hitler tried to conquer the world, and hold me accountable and punish me all my life?

Secondly, I strongly feel that if a group of people is going to be a functioning OR DEPENDANT part of any community, they need to carry some of the burden if they are capable of doing so. Thanks to casinos, they are more than capable now..

It just strikes me as odd that while they don't help pay for the necessities to facilitate a community, (read fire stations, roads, welfare etc etc etc), they continue to bring millions of TAX FREE dollars into their communitites via casinos and other loops, spend it all on themselves, and still expect to have all the freedoms and benefits and use these facilities as the rest of the tax payers in this country.

IMNSHO, it's like welfare when you're perfectly capable of working and refuse to, but with a rather large TAX FREE income on the side, as well as the ability to be exempt from the laws and rules of the society you live in.

Dis-information is frightening... rolleyes.gif

'Rekd teh un-informed and ignorant will unknowingly fight to have every freedom they live for taken away. Along with their money.
