MC books

After the wonderful welcome I recieved a few days ago I thought I would sit back and read more of the posts here to see what I could pick up.

The one about a MC bible was interesting but on Friday the 13th,I ordered four books from this forum,(disign,tombstone,4&5 axis, and Mill training with CD) I wonder if I wasted a $177, we have been using Version 9 Mill and Solids by Dr. Lin and Shiue for class but it seems to me some on this forum do not care for it much.

Well, sence I am so "dieing to learn MC" and would also like to spend more money on learning, someone made a post/reply about using CD training instead of reading more books, which one/ones would be best to fork out the bucks for, my wife wasn't to happy that I got the other books, but you know, its take money to make money I told her smile.gif

Which one would be best to get?

PS, please don't tell my wife

Thanks Much

Mct010,

Do you have a real name, or at least a 'human' handle?

We used the Lin & Shiue book at my college MC class. I don't have much good to say about it. Do a search and you'll find the opinions of many on this book...some good and some bad.

I have the In-House Solutions Mill book from the class I took at my dealer. I like the fact that it tells you step by step how to do one, AND THEN they give you one to do on your own. Remember what you just did, apply it to a new application, use your head, and get the job done. If I can quote Mike Mattera from ShopWare Inc from the MC Bible thread...

quote:

Most books tell you what to do but not why your doing it. This leads to and action without an understanding of the result.

I agree with this and this is why I don't like tutorial books.

The MC Handbooks, by our very own Charles Davis from San Diego Cad/Cam, have received excellent reviews here.

I have also heard only good things about the FMMT training CDs.

This board is probably the best "e-book" you'll find because it deals with real life problems. You can come here and get specific answers for the job that is on your machine right now! You'll hardly find a book that can do that. Have a topic that you've been wondering about? Search the board. If not specifically, just do a search for generic terms like surfaces, solids, or trimming and scan the results for something that grabs your attentions. Or you can read the help file in MC. Scan through the topics to find something interesting. I do this when I'm bored.

These are only my opinions and they're worth exactly what you paid for them. wink.gif

Mike,

First off – Welcome to the forum! smile.gif

In the other thread you were referring to, that person was looking for a “BIBLE” for MC, similar to what there is available for AutoCad. I don’t think such a thing exists. As someone else said, if there were it would be quite a large book! eek.gif

As far as the money spent on the books you have already ordered – if you learn only a few things from them – is it not worth it?

I would think so! confused.gif

Knowledge is not cheap - except here on the forum! biggrin.gif

Thad made some good points, some people like training CD’s, some like books, but this forum is also a vast wealth of knowledge, so don’t overlook the forum as a Training Manual of sorts. The “Search” button can help in a lot of ways.

I am thinking I may try out Charles Davis’s, “Handbook” series of books. I have heard some of the "More Knowledgeable People" on the forum saying good things about them. So if they think it is a good book – I’m not about to argue!

Plus - don't overlook your Dealer most offer training. idea.gif

Again, Welcome! cheers.gif

Later,

Mark Anderson
