  1. was this an exisiting toolpath already defined by points??

I think once you've selected points, you can't go back

there should be no trouble using chains for a fresh grooving toolpath

No, it was a new toolpath. Person wanted some instruction on how to toolpath a tricky groove.

Because the Ribbon Bar expands down to show General, Manual and Canned toolpaths, it is easy to scroll down to Canned and not realise it. The Category heading doesn't update when you scroll down, and that is what caught me. :)

  2. Ok, I was just looking at a file for someone.

I went to try a toolpath for them in MC2017, and tried a Lathe Groove toolpath. The chain option is grayed out, and it will only let me use 1 point, 2 points, or three lines.

What is up with that? The same profile in X9, I can chain.

  3. When you use the chain method don't use chain as your methods, but use partial. Then keep picking your chain like normal, but when you get to the start point you go around again. You can do it a couple different ways, but I find this the easiest way to teach people to do it.

Ron, that is exactly what I have done. Especially with engraving, to avoid excessive hop ups. Using a high federate, I sometimes re-trace the contour(s). Way quicker that way :)

I've met the guys from Techtown, when I was at a resellers conference in 2009 (in the good old days). Actually, I still have their business cards. They seemed like good people.

Interestingly, I've encountered quite a few pirates a lot closer to home over the past few years. It is quite surprising how many people are out there have been on far less than legit licenses.

  5. I am going tomorrow to SW World will be looking at this new Beta and what it can do.

It is funny about the HSMWorks for SW before they bought from Cimco it was a gold Partner but after Autodesk bought it they were shunned by SW. As I know I do not thing they are gold partners still.

I remember working at an Autodesk both showing HSMWorks and Inventer HSM and we were right next to SW they would not send anyone over to us.

It will be interesting to hear about what it can do :)

I remember when the Gold Partner status was removed for HSMWorks. Autodesk were "wtf?"... Still, Autodesk would probably do the same.

  6. Once someone needs to move up from Fusion, the next step up is various modules of HSMWorks

I've got to say, I was shocked at how expensive it is though

Prices are way up since Autodesk bought them out

Autodesk are really thumping the Cloud drum. It sure isn't for me.

I wasn't aware of HSMWorks pricing before Autodesk took it over, but I know there is a lot of resistance to the subscription type license.

  7. I couldn't either

I think it was just announced yesterday or this morning at SolidWorks World

The Autodesk guys were chuffed about being able to supply free HSMExpress to Solidworks users. It will be interesting to see where all this leads :)

Being that HSMWorks isn't a gold partner, that puts them on a lower tier.

  8. The Multus U3000/4000 machines as some have mentioned in this thread, would work well for this application.

I spent some time on a U3000 at Okuma in Charlotte, and it is a very capable machine. I'm waiting for our U3000 to be installed (building still being finished for the new machine shop).

WFL is another VERY nice machine. Though it depends on size. I believe they don't make smaller machines.

  9.  Mastercam 2D capabilities are probably the best out there

In fairness, I think there are decent number of applications out there with 2D capabilities as good as, and in the area of stock recognition, superior to Mastercam. Certainly for ease of use, MC is in the upper bracket though.

It's not like they couldn't have come up with something different. Aside from that, I'm not sure what year Gibbs actually came out with the TMS, but based on the 2004 release date all MC needs to do is wait 3 more years for the patent to be up

Then they would only be 20 years behind. In software, that's no big deal, right?

    Mill-Turn *cough* LOL
