Multi-Master

Hello everyone. Ive got some surface maching to do with a 3/8 ball endmill in 4140 prehard material. There are quite a few of these to do so I dont think carbide endmills will be cost effecient so im looking for something insertable. Been looking at some multi-master cutters by Iscar. Just wondering if anyone has used these and your opinion on them. Any input will help on determining what type cutters to look for.

We use the multimaster tools here and I have found them to be very good tools. They are very rigid and the replacement heads are reasonably priced and coolant thru on the bars is a plus.

I have a multi-master that I use from time to time. They do work very well. Robb Jack has a line of one-step die/mold endmills which may be more cost effective though. They are about equal in price versus multi-master, but can be re-ground.

We use a 5/8 ball version on 304SS & a T-slotter on 316SS. Both work great for us. Iscar has (had?) a deal recently where you buy 4 heads & a shank, & you get 2 heads free. We took advantage of it.

When you say "prehard," do you mean something like 28-30 Rc?

I use Seco Minimaster tools .

I also use standart Iscar tools with IC900 coating .

I also like Y-G Xpower .

I use the multi master for over two years now

great tool for roughing and semi finish, didn't had luck with them in finishing.

Thad it will be up around 35rc. Thanks everyone for you input. Think ill try the multimaster and maybe a tungaloy for finishing

Stick with the carbide tool body. the HSS ones didnt work well for us

We use a ballnose finishing tool from Sandvik with a replacable tip. Comes in 8, 10, 12, 16. I used to use mini-master quite a bit, but have found much better life from the sandvik inserts.
