Boring Head opinions

We are looking to purchase a couple of boring heads. 1 basically general one but we need a very accurate one that we can control down to the tenth.

 

Any have any suggestions on a good quality brand?

Oh boy, there is a bunch of choices...

If I had to replace mine, I'd do for Command Urma Boring System.

They are good to 20000 rpm, sizes .040" to 31.630"

and can be easy set to .0001"

Urma through Command Tool. Swiss made. Top notch quality. But, also has the price to go with it. We have used the MicroMax boring system from Urma for about 6 years now. Not a single complaint.

Kaiser, Iscar, Sandvik, KM, etc all offer nice stuff that's accurate.

 

For a 'general' one I think I'd go Criterion or something that's reasonably accurate and very affordable.

 

For the fussy stuff, if your size range is in the ballpark I'd go with the Circle Romicron system; we've been using these for about a year now and I have to say it is the cats a$$. It ain't cheap but it works great.

Exactly Robk.

But if you don't crash it, it will last forever.

Ours are 15+ years old, work like a charm.

Go for a best quality, much better in the long run.

We have been using the Its-Bore system through Iscar.

Reasonably priced and pretty good accuracy also.

Very true Mark. Oh yeah, the insert life is excellent also. We index the inserts maybe once every 6 months on a tool that gets used everyday.

d'andrea is the best one i have seen. big bucks though. about 10 years ago a set of 3 boring heads. 12",9" ,6" for about $25,000. used on boring mills and jig bores.

You may want to dig into your boring cycles you want to use and what's available on your machine. If you want to do a shift-retract or back boring cycle the orientation to the toolholder may be critical. You may be able to specify the angle on the machine or the boring bar itself may need to be at a specific angle.

The Urmas are nice but my personal favorite is Walhaupter. Might want to give them a look before you buy. Had a nice article in the latest Cutting Tool Engineering Magazine (I believe). If you're interested I can scan and send.

The best bar i have seen is the Romicron "clicker" it has a .00008 adjustment. they are spendy but well worth it when you are boring +/- .0001 bores. we have one and they work great. Also the Graflex EPB bars are very nice to work with
