Now that bytes

It's too bad they don't see the sense in having this forum available to the people using MC. Well maybe after some fits and starts they can be convinced to allow access, even if it is just to this site.

Sorry to hear about it tho'

Next time you have a Mcam problem, go and tell "the man" you've got 2 options to solve your problem:

A- Call dealer and wait for call back. Could be minutes, could be hours, could be days.

B- Get ONLINE and find answer probably immediatly, if not then in under 10 minutes.

Me, I always love to harass "THE MAN" biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif Hey wait a minute, I'M the man here!

As far as I'm concerned, the internet is just another tool in your toolbox.

I use it for finding tooling, material searching and different properties of materials, software updates and a whole lot more...

Steel,

It happened to me a while back.

I was cool about it and told them

I need this site and the Solidworks site.

They cleared them for me.

a bit later I said I needed "How stuff works.com"

Because its a Site dedicated to Robotics (Well Kind of) They cleared it also. biggrin.gif

So be cool and tell them this site is legit.

"Kill em With Kindness" wink.gif

Good Luck

Tony

Internet access is almost mandatory today. What with patches for the needed software, access to resources like this forum, need to communicate with customers, tooling and material research needs, to be disconnected is the worst thing for a shop. Porn and illegal music downloads and viruses can be blocked, but the knowledge must flow freely.

We lost our access to the internet about two years ago. I retired about six months later. The funny part was we all started to work at 5:30 AM and the boss showed up about 8 or 9 or ........ We had to wait for him to come in to get files from customers and updates for MC and Windows and virus, etc. The amount of hours wasted per day was terrible. The last I heard, the guy who replaced me is pulling his hair out because he is in his late thirties and has a whole bunch of time left! Ah, retirement. I really "miss" the BS.

Thanks for the sympathy guys. All it takes is a couple of whinners bitching because they can't do something to ruin it for the rest of us.

I had been pointing out all the valuable tips and shortcuts I had been gleening from this forum but to no avail. They will have to learn the hard way I guess.. later guys....

P.S. to Die Sinker can't wait to join you in retirement. May be sooner then they think...

Wow Pin, that's too bad.

It is certainly easy to get carried away on the internet, but there are tons of valuable things I would be forever finding, or learning without it.

Although I am "the man" here, I think people in positions requiring tooling solutions should have some kind of access.

But I know how some people get carried away. So the answer should be, slap THEM on the wrist and don't ruin it for everyone.

IMHO

This forum has saved my company Thousands of dollars in the last couple of yrs. The owner here knows it!!

I am always looking on here while my machine runs. He has even ask me to go online to get info from him.

I have seen him give that little look a time or two. You know the look, I'm paying you good money, you should be sweeping the floor whipping your machine.

I have been waiting on the day he says no more connection. That's when I say ok but it will cost you more in the long run.

I try to let them know when I'm having trouble and where I got the fix(forum memebers!!!). The statement at the bottom of my listing is so true. This forum Rocks when you need help. It is also great when you need a laugh to make it thu the day. Case in point. The owners are really down on France as a country and people. They were going to load parts in the machines this weekend. I got the post about the terror alert in France being raised(see off topic forum). I posted it on the machine they were going to be runing Saturday morning. They got a big laugh!!!

Just try not to abuse the privelge, thats my theory.

Reseller should tell owners the importance of the forum, it does take a load off them.

This forum is probably the reason we get to keep the internet! In our area we are checking out the site daily and have found out how valuable the tips are! I am currently in the process of trying to get them to allow access to the ftp site. I dont know if I can get them to do it, but it is worth a try. I have been in other forums, and find none that stand out close to this one. What is amazing about this forum is that you have almost instant response to problems that one has.

Hope they let you back soon!

Brian

Good advise from all...

Bpin, Does it stem from abuse?

Remember use but not abuse! Will the boss take a look at what the forum is saying? Or has there been to much abuse?

just thoughts as my machine runs it final program for today. At 150% feed so I can leave at a decent time..... The owner knows how I run the shop.

You know most of the guys here complaining they do not have internet access. And try to justify having it by this forum or many other useful forums are not taking into the waste the internet can be also. If a employee was strictly using it for work email and only work related things. Then by all means the internet is very valuable. But how many actualy use it only for work related issues? and do not browse cnn.com or what ever fancys you.

Then just maybe the benefits do not overcome the waste people are doing. Browsing senseless websites, buying flowers for the wife at ftd.com.

I agree that there is probably internet abuse at the job shop, I dont disagree with that. What I do know is I have had jobs that I have had to try to toolpath and it took many hours to try to perfect. With a question or search to the forum I can have answers in almost minutes. I am not saying it justifys internet at the job shop. If it would please the boss I could pull out the manual and read for several hours and do a trial and error on how to make the toolpath work. I am not speaking for anyone but myself. Our company thought because we purchased mastercam that a 4 day crash coarse of less then 40 hours should make us gurus at programming. All I am saying is it makes me more productive having a forum to go to for help, and hopefully help others. I can watch a fly against the glass look busy as h-ll, it dosent mean hes getting anywhere! I think that is what is so great about the forum, it helps me get somewhere without hours of wasted time with trial and error.

thats just my opinion

Looks like I will no longer be able to log on at my day job into Emastercam as MetalMarvels. I might still be able to - but only if I create a whole new registration for my "daytime" persona.

They are on a "witch hunt" right now and my using my personal company logon to access from my day job will be a red flag. Bear in mind that I DO use Mastercam at my day job - but that won't matter in the least when they shout "conflict of interest". Never mind that I have declared my home business and always let them know when I am doing business with a company that they do business with. Never mind that I have been very, very careful never to engage in anything related to my own business while working on their dime. The BS level is getting impossible these days.

They have gotten the benefit of "fixes" that I have worked out at home for my own business. Particularly in the area of tweaked posts - I worked it out and did the necessary learning on my own time (admittedly for MY business) and they DID see benefits. However, I know that the corporate folks wouldnt hesitate to pink tag me for "abuse of internet".

I think the time has come to begin careful expansion of my own shop and tell them to xxxx off...... mad.gif

Most definitely! cheers.gif I'm on my own now too and so far I'm loving every minute of it. My time is now my own and the #1 thing I have to worry about now is overcommitting myself. There's lots of work out there for independants and if you're not tied to a 9 to 5, it makes you that much more valuable. I am truly blessed to be in the position I am in right now and leaving the confines of a single company is really the type of environment where I will flourish personally and professionally.

I hear you James! The corporate scene just keeps getting uglier. I have been with the company I work for for 13+ years. I thought for sure that I was a goner this past fall when corporate suits came in and cleared out all of the senior management. I was the ONLY one left in my entire department - didn't even have anyone to sign my timesheet. I was given two days to find a "home" on the contract.....

One of my best customers just sat me down for a chat and let me know that he would gleefully load me up if I could figure out how to increase my throughput. He indicated that I was only getting 5-10% of the work he outsources (and I thought I was getting a pretty good chunk of it!). Seemed like a pretty strong HINT to me.....particularly since I am having to turn a lot of work away. Right now, the amount of work I am getting (after expenses) is about 2/3 of my salary for the "day" job. Not good enough to launch with 2 kids in college and one who will be there in two years.

I am therefore looking into acquiring one or two smaller VMC's to go with my Fadal 3016L. I really want to fit two of them in about 14' x 7' of the garage. If I were to rearrange my 3016L in the garage, I could get it down to about 1/3 of the total space (it now occupies about 1/2 - with a work bench in front of it).

I have been carefully snooping around my area and have noted that about 3/5 of the shops that were in business 3 years ago are gone. The remaining shops, with a couple of exceptions, are just busting at the seams and can't handle any more work.

However, I also don't want to over-extend myself either. It REALLY bites when the beginning of the month rolls around and there isn't enough money in the bank account to make a machine tool payment (like a couple years back!!!!).

Sorry about the hijack..... But I would DIE without the internet for my home business. I just do NOT understand how these companies can contemplate cutting off access. I depend on it at work for a lot of research about parts and systems. Just finished a $15 million proposal and it would have been impossible without an internet connection to do the needed research in identifying potential vendors.

Yeah Gary, I hear you. I was a bit nervous at first, but after looking at how much work I turned away last year, some really cool 5-Axis Stuff too that I was dying to do but with the 9-5... could not commit the time to do it right. My oldest will be a senior next year, one thing we've never waivered from though is that he makes his own way to college. Athletics, grades, whatever, it's on him. So far he's doing well. He has a "CIF Scholar Athlete" patch on his Letterman's Jacket.

I believe everything happens for a reason . I don't regret for a single second the decision to be my own boss one bit. I get to write off a bunch of stuff the 9-5'ers don't get to also. Every time I drive somewhere (unless it's personal of course) cha-ching.... I'm writing it off biggrin.gif Lots of every day expenses get to be written off. biggrin.gif

Maybe you can get a committal from your guy to get more work. Mayhaps that would make the decision a smidge easier... biggrin.gif

Good Luck Gary!!!

Being the only Mastercammer at my place and since maintenance and reseller support was not renewed, my only support is this forum and the collection of In House tutorials. I can not even call my reseller now, so this forum gets me out of a bind now and then. My internet connection and Mastercam are on an older computer, but better than not. I am careful not to abuse, but someone that used to work with me spent more time cruising Yahoo personals than working.
