Chaining in X

I tried help but couldn't find anything useful. When selecting geometry for commands that don't open the chaining dialog box is there a way to select a partial chain? I am trying to change levels on something and I don't want to pick them one by one, but I don't need the whole chain either. There must be a way.

Make you first pick where you want the partial chain to start.

The whole chain lights up.

Now pick near end on the partial chain. Done

For some reason it doesn't seem to work all the time. Any ideas?

I think it'll mess you up if the chain reaches a branch point.

Chaining will sometimes act funny if there is duplicate geometry underneath or if endpoints are not contiguous. This can be either by being a little short or overlapping.

It is a nice clean chain. I can select the whole thing with no trouble at all, but I only want part of it.

From the help;

 

To select entities using the Chain selection method, hold down the Shift key and select a single entity that is part of a chain of other entities. Alternatively, you can choose Chain from the Selection Methods drop-down list and click an entity that is connected to other entities. For example, clicking one side of a rectangle selects all four sides and clicking one line that is connected to another selects both lines.

Yes it does...

I am trying to chain part of a large wireframe to project and it has mannnnny branch points. Is there any way to activate the chain dialog box for a translate operation?
