Trimming surfaces

I have a problem trimming two surfaces on a 3D part I am drawing. I need to upload to the FTP site but not sure where to put it. I have it saved as a MCX file and a DXF file. Plese tell me which one I should upload and to which directory. Then we can continue with the trimming problem I have.

If it's an mcx file, the mcx folder will be fine.

This file is in the mcx directory under the name "Trimming problem".

 

If you remove the shading, you can see there is a 1.0 radius running thru the middle of this part near the top, that is supposed to be open thru the part. I trimmed all the other surfaces, but cant seem to get the angles to trim the the 1.0 radius.

I would've just done it and put it on the FTP but I'm home with DEMO only so this example will have to do...

 

I copied the hidden surface to a new level. Then I untrimmed the copy. Then I extended the copy so it would COMPLETELY intersect the other surface. Then trim surface to surface works fine.

Thats exactly what I needed. But I started out with those surfaces and could not trim them like you did. I will try it again.

Another option you could try if you're still having trouble is to create a curve at the intersection of the green and blue surfaces (Create-Curve-Intersection, I think). Then trim the surface to curves.

I guess what I realy need is some training in 3d drawing. Im getting part of it, but having trouble finishing the picture. Is it necessary to go to class for this or will a training manual be enough help?

OK. I have a new file that is almost done. Go to the mcx directory and get trimming problem again. All I need to do is create a surface at the bottom of the 1.0 radius so the cutter can cut the bottom of the surface.

Did you extend the sides of surfs to beyond the height of the angled surfs? CLick the delete box inside the surfs trim options and slide the arrows to the parts of the surfs that you want to remain.hth G

Your best bet would be some one-on-one time with someone who knows it. That way you could concentrate on your particular questions. Next, I would suggest some tutorial books. That way, you can work at your own pace. Finally, I would recommend a class at the local community college. They tend to be slow moving (in my experience), but you have plenty of time to try new things.

 

In that order, those are my recommendations.

 

In the "Drawings" folder on the FTP, I've uploaded a bunch of practice files to mess with. They range in difficulty from lower # to higher. My files are called mill.zip and lathe.zip. They're fulling dimensioned prints that you can create with wireframe for surfaces/solids.

I also find the classes slow moving. I am pretty much self trained on Mastercam. The problem is 3d is so much more involved than 2d. Workikng with someone that knows it would be my best bet,that is if I could find someone that would spend the time.

 

Which tutorial book in particular would you suggest? I am doing this all on my own. My place of employment does not think we need this training. I just enjoy learning something new.

So you need what Matt has above...the pink/purple surface in the after picture? If so, you could have trimmed the green to the blue surface, and then the blue to the green.

I think you're just making it harder now. You had that surface a few minutes ago.

 

What happened to it ? can you undelete it ?

 

Are you aware that when you trim surfaces to surfaces there are lots of options in the ribbon bar ? Specifically "trim #1", "trim #2", and "trim both"...

I just did that one with a ruled surf with each chain worked good. I have both files done if ya need them let me kow.

The books listed here in the Books area are pretty good.

 

I'd be happy to help you over the phone, if you'd like. They would have to be simpler projects or we'd spend the entire time trying to explain which part we were talking about.

Maybe sometime when Im in Detroit we could do that. What kind of access do you have to mastercam on the weekend. Which also means you would have to do work on the weekend.

I have done a little tutoring with Windows Remote Assistance... The other guy had Mastercam 8 and everything worked great except he couldn't see my cursor on his screen at times... A bit frustrating... I'd be willing to try again with "X" though. A picture is worth a thousand words...
