Creating threads using solids

If I am creating a solid model using Mastercam Solids V9.1 is it possible to create a threaded hole? I would appreciate any feedback.

An easy way of doing this is to get a solid model of a bolt (you can download solid models from McMaster Carr) and then place it in the correct location and then do a Boolean subtract.

You could also sweep a cross section (triangle shape) of the thread along a helix representing the thread pitch.

sometimes in the mold industry threads are formed right in the mold and therefore have to be machined somehow. Picture a pill bottle and cap. that's a good example of internal and external threads that need cut right into the mold.

While doing mold s most of time I had no need to draw them

Most of times it is enough to draw helix

Sometimes it is enough to draw a circle

Threads are very resource eating elements ,try to avoid them as much as possible .

I'm with Steve. Sweep cut a triangle with a helix.

I've never had a need to model threads in Mastercam. In SolidWorks the Hole Wizard has a "cosmetic thread" option. If you turn it on, SolidWorks will accuratley model all threaded holes. Computer performance will take a serious hit though.

Thanks for all the replies threads were something I wanted to incorporate into my solid models just for the visual effect and for the sake of making it work. The Mcmaster Carr method worked fine I'll try to sweep cut a traingle with a helix as well. Thanks again for all the help.

Yeah it will, it makes a file soooo much larger than it

needs to be.

If its not absolutely needed i'd seriously leave them out.
