lathe chucks

Hey everyone, I'm in the market for a new chuck on our haas tl-1. Has anyone bought a chuck they are happy with on that machine?? I has a Bison that came with it, I don't like it very much. I've only used cheap imports never had a high dollar chuck. I was thinking of spending around $2500. Looked at Kitagawa, Pratt Bernerd

it's a 8" with A2-5 mount. Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Gotta run, I'll check back tomorrow

Kitagawa is my fav.

 

We also have an SMW Autoblock on our Haas SL30 with quick release jaws. Quite handy if you change jaws alot.

Kitagawa are decent but I really like the autoblok chucks, we have a 800mm one on our mori lathe its great, you can see the quality.

Randy, we also have an Autoblock quick-change chuck [which is an OK chuck] and DAMN those jaws are $$.

 

I'm assuming that's a manual scroll chuck on that TL-1? Buck, Cushman, or Pratt-Burnerd would be my picks for manual chucks.

For the ultimate in versatility, go Hainbuch, the options are endless, for a nominal fee. But they are built very nice.

My favorite is Greenfield. By far the most accurate for TIR and the best quality I have ever seen.

I run a Kitagawa where I am now and we also have a Hardinge as well. The Hardinge is nicer quality and weight relieved which can be a good thing. Both can be good for .0005 TIR if you are good at getting things just right

I have a Shunk chuck on my HAAS SL-40. I love it. Makes changing out jaws really quick.

I ran a shop with 23 twin spindle Wasino that ran 24/7 (swing shift. The Pratt Bernerd that were installed in 1992 lasted till 1998. We replaced them with Kitagawa. The Kitagawa's did not last 2 years.
