communications error revisited

I've got three different computers, all sending to seperate machines and they all post this error after dnc/upload. I have sent dozens of programs over, and have not had any errors in code. So far this is just an annoyance, albeit a big one. Any ideas?

When you say "dnc/upload" you mean from the machine to the computer????

yes. Either running a dnc one-shot program, or uploading into machine memory. This error just started occuring after x2

What's your FIFO setting?

FIFO meaning 7, 2, even; and then machine specific baud rates.?

 

also "use FIFO buffers" is checked in my advanced com port settings.

You might have a bad install. Maybe try reinstall?

 

FIFO buffer settings should not make MCXcomm crash, however, FIFO buffer should be always turned off (restart the PC after you've done it regardless of W2K or XP).

3 bad installs? I'm doing a full clean install on a new pc right now, so we'll see. Talked to my dealer, and apparently this problem rears it's head occasionally. They also are looking into it.

 

where do you mean turn fifo off? in the com port settings? beacuse it's on by default, and I have never changed any settings in the port previously.

Yes that is where you Turn off the FIFO buffer.

Uncheck the "Use FIFO buffers" in the COM port advanced settings.

 

Leave "FIFO buffer on" sometimes works fine, more times will not, especially if you do drip feeding. It's a good thing to turn it off. I've hooked up hundreds of machines via RS-232. One of the first thing I do at a installation is to turn off "FIFO buffers" on all COM ports.

 

I prefer to use CIMCO Edit or DNC-Max to do RS-232 transfers. You can download a demo version from their web site if you are interested (http://www.cimco-software.com).

I have setup a few using the editor for communications and have not seen this yet but I alwas uncheck the FIFO.

I too have this problem, but have been unable to find the advanced COM port settings.

How do you get to that?

Right click My computer >> Properties >> Device Manger >> the correct com port >> right click >> properties >> port setting >> advanced

thanks, I was looking everywhere in mastercam and MC editor. didn't realize it was a windows setting.

I made these changes, but now MCeditor changed the baud rate to 9600. I try to change it back to 19200, but it will not let me.

 

any ideas on how to fix this one? I will be deperate for it soon.

Eric,

 

In Mastercam Editor, under "Tools" --> "Options" --> "Communications", select the correct xml file as the "Default Machine".

 

Then, click on "Communications" on the main menu --> "Configure" and change the bauderate on the "Port" page.

 

By the way, after you unchecked "FIFO" buffer, be sure to restart the PC.

Turn off the hardware FIFO buffer? That's a strange optimization to make on a non-realtime OS like Windows. Is this something that just seems to work, or is there a reason for it?

Chris, are you running multiple versions of Mastercam (X or later) on these machines?

yes and no. Most computers have the latest x2 and v9, and nothing else. My laptop has v9, xmr2, x2, and beta. They all perform identically. I do have a reply from someone at cnc regarding this general issue... I'll post his recommendation mid-next week when I'm back from vacation (and have the email in front of me!).

I am having the same problem. The FIFO change made no difference for me either. We have multiple users and multiple login on the same machine. At first it only was on one login but now all logins are affected.

If you have v9 installed, I'd use CIMCO Edit for DNC.
