Velocite No.3

We have some 5 gal buckets here that we suspect may have the wrong stuff in them. Does anyone know if Velocite No.3 smells anything like solvent? One of the buckets still had the seal on it but the lid may have been removed so we're not sure.

My suggestion is "WHEN IN DOUBT THROW IT OUT".

I believe its spindle oil and would be

light in color. Way lube has a stronger smell

and is much darker

Toss it. Whatever the cost of the bucket plus disposal PALES in comparison to the cost of the damage you could do.

yes it basically does and its like watter.its used for cooling media in the Variaxis 500 i run.

a better description would be its almost like diesel.

One giveaway for Velocite #3 is that it is, I'm pretty sure, yellow in color. It does also smell quite a bit like diesel or kerosene from my recollection.

 

I agree with "when in doubt, throw it out" because the potential damage that the incorrect fluid could cost far outweighs the cost of the oil.

Yes I have 5 gal from 12 years ago I use for light spindle oil in Moore jig boore...what I have is light yellow and has solvent smell sorta and has consistancy of solvent, I would never guess it is spindle oil...was told its thin to penetrate close tol. fits...sounds like same thing to me...

After adding 2 moore #3 jig grinders I now use DTE Light oil...

They may have "colored" oil yellow for people to help identify it is #3...I would could call the supplier lubricant house to see. I have never seen anything like this anywhere else including EDM fluids..

The potenial damage and costs resulting from

putting the wrong lubricant in the wrong place.

far exceed the cost of a bucket of oil..

I would not even think of using it.. especially in a high end machine like a Variax

Thanks for all the great input. We did call the supplier and it is the right stuff. I agree with everyone on "when in doubt, throw it out" though but sometimes it’s hard to convince the owner... I'll just leave it at that, I think that should adequately show my frustrations.
