HAAS TM-1 Spindle RPM

My Haas TM-1 has a 4k spindle. Does anyone know if there is a way to increase the rpms. I've heard it's possible, but not sure how. It may sound dumb, but i still want to keep it in a "Safe" range, just a bit faster.

The safe range on a Haas is do not turn on the spindle!

 

I would not try to increase the speed, the bearings will not handle it.

Yes it can be done. We had a Haas tech in here last week to work on our VF-3 and while he was here I asked him to turn the spindle up on our TM-1. It now runs 6000rpm

 

I wasn't out in the shop watching, so I can not tell you how to do it, sorry

We use ours mainly for prototype plastic parts. Sometimes when a customer wants a plastic mold, they also want a handful of parts before the mold is built to make sure the parts work.

I called our Haas dealer to ask about this and they had no idea if this was possible or not. In fact, they had never heard of it before.

When I was a kid I used to take small dc motors and run them at 2-3 times the rated voltage. They went real fast, just not for too long.

Doug, The tech acted stupid when I asked, then I told him I had seen one run 6000 rpm's at U of L

and he started laughing and then said he would do it. They're not gonna tell you it can be done, but the pic shows it can.

Can you look in your parameter menu and see what value is in #79

I changed my #131 to 6000 but it still only runs 4000. It will let you program 6000, but only runs 4000. There must be something else that he changed.

if i remember right there is a parameter for max spindle speed

i havent ran a haas in over a year so i cant give ya the para number

Also try re-starting after changing the parameters.

I remember when I was hooking it up to the network I had to re-start numerous times to make changes take effect.

I am not sure about the TM-1, but the OLD VF3's had a Magnetek Variable Frequency Drive, you had to change the Max Frequency Parameter and the analog input scaling Parameter. If I remember right original was set to 60Hz and we went to 90 Hz for both.

I have have owed my TM1 four over 5 years now, and still like it I change my max spindle speed from 4000rpm to 6000rpm as it is the same motor and spindle as the mini mill.

 

Max Spindle Speed Parameters

There are two parameters that you will need to change to increase your spindle speed.

 

131-MAX SPINDLE RPM

 

183-Sp MAX FREQ

 

(PAR 183= MAX SPINDLE SPEED / 3 * 10)

 

SO IF YOU WANT YOUR SPINDLE TO BE ABLE TO GO TO 6000.

 

131 = 6000

183 = 20000

You should run in the spindle with no load for 2-3 hours increasing to max speed, and make changes to your warm up program.

I thank you all for the info. I'll try some things and see if it's possible. I don't plan on roughing the hell out of stuff at higher rpm's. We do a lot of prototype parts designed to be die cast (aluminum) and i just wanted to be able to go a little faster on the surface finish toolpaths. I like making things look like the were not done in a machine, so i go for small stepovers and awesome finishes!

Works great, 6000rpm. Thanks for the info guys.

 

Now I need to figure out if the Spindle in our TL-1 (2000 rpm factory) is the same spindle as the 3500 rpm option. We have the fully enclosed version of the machine so 3500 rpm should be ok if the spindle will handle it.
