.020 deep 45 degree slots- plastic

I ran my second setup peice out of pomalux industrial grade plastic you can buy atMcmastercarr. Everything is okay until I cut the fricking .020 deep slots with a new 1/8 45 degree carbide endmill 2 flute. The slots look like there is no V at the bottom. I have a TM-1 and max RPM is 4000.

 

Is this RPM the problem. I run at 10 IPM and went down tto 5 on cleanup. Or do I need to grind a 1/8 spade much like a engraving tool wioth a sharp point at 45 degrees.

Is the tool still at 45° on the nose or did it "wear" down?

Can you check the part on a Comparator?

 

.02 deep x 45° isn't going to look like very much.

You can get 6000 out of it

Mayby tipping the part at 45. then running a standard e-mill through it might get it.

The tip might be clogging heating up and possibly melting the plastic a little.

That would be my suggestion. Something like a sin vise or angle blocks should do the trick. Believe it or not the bigger and sharper endmill you use the better it will work.

It sounds like the chips aren't clearing. Try a SHARP 45 deg. split blank/engraving tool and put an air nozzle as close to the leading edge as possible and blast them out of there.

a two flute going that shallow of depth is only going to "push" the material. too big of a web right at center of cutter. you would get away with it if the material was wood, but not plastic.

 

if you have to use your current set up, i would switch tooling to a single flute engraving type cutter with at least a .005 tip land.

May you setup the part with 45 degree, then use an sharp endmill mill it.

The tip of the tool is always at 0 S.F.M.

At an effictive cutting diameter of .040" at 4000 R.P.M. that equates to 41.8 S.F.M.

It looks like you are doing more pushing of the material than cutting.

Thanks guys page 155 it is. I ran a stinking 1/8 drill mill /center drill. same crap but worse. It took the material down .010 from where it was supposed to be.
