Surface rgh contour : Multi passes.

Is there a way to apply multi passes, radially, to the surface rgh contour tool path? Max radial cut for my tool is already set in the tool parameters. Thanks.

Radially? Like Step-Over? No! Only way would be to copy and paste Multiple tool paths in the Op Manager and decrease the Stock to Leave

Have you looked at HS Rough Restmill, we use this for our castings, they have about .5" of extra material on them.

 

If you haven't used it before, it's kind of a mixture of rough pocket and rough contour.

Rgh pocket does OK, but adds extra passes.

 

Rgh parallel gives me incomplete clean-up do to a small wave in the surface

 

Just wondering though. What are the advantages of surface rgh contour vs. surface finish contour if multi-pass isn't an option?

IMO there isn't one so I don't use it and only use surface finish countour.

They are the exact same toolpath. CNC Software just wanted to make sure it was available under both the Roughing and Finishing menus.

Aclually, you can also define an STL file of the stock before machining in the restmill toolpath. We are starting to use it and like it a lot. Big time saver for castings.

Will a simple sqr. of the raw material work for the stl?

 

I ended up making a BS op just to try it. These surfaces seem to wavy in all directions to get uniform cuts with just 1 strategy.

Yes, any STL (as long as it is watertight) will work for your stock...

 

I usually use an STL tolerance of 10-20% of my "stock to leave". Seems to work pretty well.
