Maching Waspaloy

Hello , does anyone have good SFPM on milling waspaloy.This is my first time machining it.I

here there is a vary small maching window for this material.Any help would be appreciated.

the maximum SFM i tried was 50 and the cutter make a nice red chip

 

 

i only cut waspalloy 2 times and both job don't need a lot of cutting, so we don't spend money in tooling , we cut the job with the one we got in stock

For plain solid carbide tooling, between 100-200 SFM, feed varies greatly depending on dia. but as an example a .500 end mill should be between .001-.002 IPT

We run around 90 SFM carbide tooling with oil based coolant.

 

Keep tools sharp it work hardens in no time.

starting with 5706 2.0 round bar, then heat treating it 5704-G GRADE. APPROX 40-45 ROCKWELL.

It is nasty. I have cut it several times. Take yer time. You can't rush that crap.

What ever you do, DO NOT UNDER ANY CURCUMSTANCES plunge into it. Ramp, Helix, whatever you gotta do. You'll grenade a tool in 2 revs plunging. It's VERY unforgiving material.

I've got a job coming to me in the "Age Hardened" state (5707). Turning & milling, custom grooving tools for turning and a bit of milling. Any advice?

I've cut quite a bit of it.....

1) start at about 80% of what you would figure inco 718.

2) Heat treated is generally better. 42Rc is best IMO.

3) Nothing less than micro grain carbide, unless you want to get cryo treated 8% cobalt, which will last a bit longer than carbide, and is less shock prone.

4) DO NOT DWELL, but be easy on the chip load.

I had a job in college rough turning scale off waspaloy forgings, rings from about 10" dia to 6'+. Talk about tool life.
