X4 Turn Profile

This is the first time I’ve posted on here, so please go easy - I just want to give an update on the create turned profile in Mastercam.

This is designed to give back a turned profile for symmetrical and non-symmetrical geometry, but is particularly aimed at the mill/turn type components. It works by spinning the model and creating a silhouette of the model that can be used for turning. All very well in theory but there are a few gotchas with this in that it uses a mesh approximation to do this – so getting back an accurate profile has been a challenge and some of you have noticed this.

The current algorithm was new at X4. Some of the arc fitting and smoothing work was done late in the cycle and to avoid risk, we opted to tie this to prototype switch - we only provide access to this to beta testers and resellers on a request basis so most of you did not get to use this. Maybe not the right decision on our part in this case.

X5 has a number of improvements, specifically to generate more accurate geometry with a wider range of geometry. We’ve also added the option to use native a Parasolid routine (use Solid Properties – default for Solids) and, all in all, we’re pleased with the results so far. This will be included in beta 3 (around the end of July).

In the meantime if you do have specific problem parts, please forward them to the QC inbox and we’ll take a look at them as part of our internal testing and evaluation. For symmetrical geometry we would recommend using the Slice option as the Spin overhead is not required.

Hope this information helps and thanks for the feedback on this topic.

Regards
