anyone ever use plunge milling?

the part is about 15 x 7 x 5. most of the c/r are around .300. im looking for a bettter way to rough it out. also looking for a rec for thru the spin coolant inserted drills. Last plae i worked at had a full line of Guhring inseted drills that workked well. Any ideas would be great.

I used it quite a bit in big parts at my last place. But you need to be careful which tools you use.

 

A number of plunge mills require a 1-2 degree backstep coming back up. Iscar is one such.

Also, some manufacturers require a certain diameter percentage of overlap. Either no more than 80%, or no less than 30%.

After having a few suppliers in, we settled with Komet drills. Coolant thru, can come straight out, and are not limited to a certain percentage of diameter stepover.

This was in 6al4v and 420 stainless. Those Komet drills made extremely short work of hogging.

What version? It looks like this could be a good part for the new hybrid opti rough. also what material is it?

Brad,, we have x5 lvl3 with multi axis and catia v5 r19. the mat is 7075.

i agree that it could be a opti path, but i have .500 c/r on the walls that are 5.75 deep and .300 c/r that are 3.5 deep. I was just thinkin it might be better to take advantage of puttin the cuttin force in z and not xy for the roughing.

Another good application for keeping the force in Z is feedmill/helix bore

I'm a fan of the Iscar feedmill. Use them a lot

I agree with Zoober,,, Komet or Ingersol insert drills work awesome for smaller diameters.

Tried several high feed mill cutters. Really good to reach high rates removal. From my experiment, better one seems to be Mitsubishi. Sumitomo and Ceratizit are nice too. Sandvik (R210)was not that good... we even broke 3 cutters without explanation.
