anyone ever use plunge milling?

I used it quite a bit in big parts at my last place. But you need to be careful which tools you use.

 

A number of plunge mills require a 1-2 degree backstep coming back up. Iscar is one such.

Also, some manufacturers require a certain diameter percentage of overlap. Either no more than 80%, or no less than 30%.

After having a few suppliers in, we settled with Komet drills. Coolant thru, can come straight out, and are not limited to a certain percentage of diameter stepover.

This was in 6al4v and 420 stainless. Those Komet drills made extremely short work of hogging.

Brad,, we have x5 lvl3 with multi axis and catia v5 r19. the mat is 7075.

 

Zoober, thanks for info i will look into it.

 

i agree that it could be a opti path, but i have .500 c/r on the walls that are 5.75 deep and .300 c/r that are 3.5 deep. I was just thinkin it might be better to take advantage of puttin the cuttin force in z and not xy for the roughing.
