best fit bounding box

Is there a c-hook that will create a bounding box that will fit an odd shape? I have a part that is sort of an L shape and I need to figure out what the smallest stock size I can use for it.

I would probably just use the silhouette boundary and make a profile of the stock. Offset the contour and then translate the geometry with join.

thats what i ended up doing, I have to quote a bunch of parts and I need to figure out stock sizes quickly. I'd rather not have to create a bunch of geometry just for quoting.

Bounding box should give you a rectangle box around whatever shape

yes, but I am looking for best fit, i will just have to rotate the part or use the silhouette boundary. there are almost no flat surfaces on this part.

i guess that's my only other option. The only thing I don't like about that is that i have to keep rotating until i get the best angle. hardly seems efficient.

John, Can you explain the dynamic wcs that you mentioned earlier? I tried mastercam help & couldn't figure out how to do it. I import models all the time & always have to 3D translate them to align them with the WCS so if there is an easier way I would like to know how to do it. Thanks in advance!

Dynamic WCS, the little ball in the center of the gnomon is the grab point, place it where you want the new WCS oriented, using the axis handles, grab them and align the XYZ to the orientation you want, accept, set WCS.

 

It takes a bit of practice to get it but once you do, it is way quicker than translate 3D.

 

BTW, Dynamic XFORM can perform the same function, with the added ability to relocate the part as well.

Hum sounds like your configuration location for 3rd part is not looking to the right place.
