Okay then, thanks.

This guy looks interesting too:

It looks very similar to the Kurt Versalock:

http://www.kurtworkholding.com/manual-versatilelock-vise-p-1127-l-en.html

but at less than half the price.  I like the flat sides and ability to bolt it down with nothing sticking out.  My application is to stick a couple of these on a Haas next to a trunion, for stock prep and secondary ops.  Parts are medical prototypes so no heavy hogging and tolerances are fairly loose (.002").  I know just reading the name (Shars!) is cringe-worthy, but I don't see why it shouldn't work just fine.

Shars is garbage.

BUT you can get lucky and get a half decent product if you're willing to roll the dice, and quality isn't really that much of a concern.

We bought 8 of their 4" vises from them for $100 each, and have them mounted to a fixture plate. They do the job, but we have to machine soft jaws to hold any kind of accuracy.

I have the low grade Shars vises at home, they are just fine for my Bridgeport. The ones linked are Kurt Copies, I would expect them to be of much better quality, are they Kurts....no. But, there is a reason their "top" level vises are always sold out.

Side note, the Shars 100ish dollar integrated key-less chucks are money well spent. A year or so ago, my work bought 30 of them. Now when a setup guy crashes a chuck, its not a 400 dollar lyndex.

What happens, does the solid jaw move or something?

No it doesn't move, I guess I shouldn't say you can't hold accuracy with just soft jaws.

But it is all we use because of the production work we do in them.

They are definitely worth $100 each, nice and solid. But don't expect them to be like a $1,200 Chick vise ;)

 You got this style?

If so that is the type I have at home. Quality is not the best. The 225 dollar/kurt kock off  looks a lot better.

biggest issue I have come across with the cheap vices is the casting quality of the nut is typically pure crap , worked with many offshore KURT copies and they have all failed either in the main casting or the wedge nut cracks in half .

one thing I did notice when we where looking for vices for the Robodrill is that the Chick,s where a way better deal for a double vice , plus the Chick has the quick change jaws allowing quicker set-up time between jobs . In the 2 years they have been on the machine we have not removed them once .

GS makes a decent vice as well , and AUTO-WELL makes a decent vice , worked with both over the years and have AUTO-WELL in my shop at home .

That's the style.

Ours don't even say Shars. Just a vise.

Maybe ours is a Shars knock-off... oh god I couldn't even imagine lol
