I have a job.. above is a portion of the print and the section in question

here the question to engineer.. also this is a 1st. article

Question: whats the dim to (3) 6-32 sti holes..

in the y direction of print..

Answer: Dimension not required because of centerline Datum A

confused: :-)

Now am I wrong here wouldn't he need a centerline line to assume centerline

to datum A?

can anyone help here , am I wrong here or is the engineer from Mars

I've learned to never assume what an engineer is thinking, every time I have it has come back to bite me in the a$$. I would ask him to add a center line or give a dimension.

try that, but he refuses say he doesn't need to.. :-(

So let qc fight with him......

Implied yes but they will likely want a dimension :)

Yep, send it up the ladder and tell them that you do not have enough information on the print to make a good part.

oh I will let qc  fight with him, I was just wondering if I was missing something reading the print..

I thought it was a legit  question to ask..

No guessing or missing dimension here.

When the datum designator is aligned with the dimension lines, the datum = centerline of its feature. as shown at -A-, if designator is dragged off alignment as -C- is shown above thean the "EDGE" the designator is attached to is the datum.

So.. the holes have to be tp of .019 to centerline of datum -A-

Nice. Good examples here.http://www.gdandtbasics.com/datum/

Talk about a terribly dimensioned print. What about those ".100 steps 2X", in conjunction with the ".875 2X" dimensions. So is this a 1" overall bar thickness, with two .100 steps, and two .875 thick bar ends? That means the step on the bottom side (opposite the .100 dim), is .025 on both sides?

It's lazy....

It's discernible but it's  lazy

Not too impressed by the dimensioning scheme but I would be OK with a note along the lines of "All un-dimensioned basic values to CAD nominal".

IMO being able to omit dimensions is one of the great benefits of Geometric Tolerancing.  In this case though, I would add the basic dim. No reason not too. Not like it's a super crowded print.
